Day #2: IODA North American Championships

July 7, 2013

A morning shower did little to dampen the spirits of the 176 young competitors sailing on Day 2 of the 2013 IODA North American Championships on Saturday [July 6]. After a short rain squall in the morning, the skies cleared the breeze filled-in and another good day unfolded with winds from the north at 8 – 12 knots. The Race Committee wasted little time in setting the course and 3 more races were completed with time to spare.

Argentina’s Dante’s Cittadini took over the top spot from the USA’s Shawn Harvey despite an uncharacteristic 14th place for the first race of the day. Cittadini’s other finishes today of 1st & 2nd was enough to overhaul Harvey, who himself had a difficult first race of the day carding a 27th. Harvey improved during the day finishing 7th in race three and 2nd in the last race. The USA’s Ripley Shelley maintained his spot in third place despite being over the line early in Race 2, scoring an OCS.

As a total of six races have now been completed, competitors can now discard their single worst score. The nett scores have Cittadini with 11 points followed by Harvey with 17 points and Ripley two points further back. All three of the podium sailors discarded one of today’s races, indicating that their inconsistency may have been related to the somewhat shifty conditions seen out on the Great Sound.

The “upward mobility prize” went to the USA’s Angar Jordan who jumped from 36th place all the way up to 8th place. Also new to the top 10 is Singapore’s Samuel Neo who jumped from 15th yesterday to 4th place today and Ceci Wolmann from Bermuda who sailed well enough to move from 11th to 7th.

Team Bermuda showed improving form with 2 sailors now occupying the top ten. Chase Cooper still leads the pack although he fell two spots to 6th place with only one top 10 finish for the day. Ceci Wollmann is right next to him occupying the 7th position after scoring two top 10 finishes.

Campbell Patton and Joe Arrowsmith are now in the top 50 after they both had a number top ten finishes for the day, including a 3rd place finish for Arrowsmith. Mikey Wollmann seemed back on form, coming out of the blocks with a 2nd place finish in the first race of the day, jumping 75 places up into the 83rd spot. Michah Thomas-Raynor finished the day in fine fashion with an 8th in the last race.

The Team Racing event is Sunday. Sailors will have a day-off on Monday and return to the fleet championship on Tuesday.
