Junior Cyclists Take Part In Aruba Championship

Bermuda’s junior cyclists have turned in strong performances in the 8th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Aruba this morning [July 27] in very windy conditions.

Deshi Smith finished a very credible 9th place in a time of 30:51 in the Junior 17/18 category [course distance 18 kilometers] with teammate Nathaniel Hartwig stopping the clock at 31:51 in 11th.

In the 15/16 boys category Justin Ferreira completed his 12 kilometer distance in 24:40 for 5th place with Shomari Steede in 11th in a time of 27:58. The Bermuda girls were led home by Gabriella Arnold in 5th place and Kamryn Minors in 6th, in times of 19:43 and 18:34, respectively for their 9 kilometer course.

Tomorrow [Sunday] is the road race which will be contested on a rolling course where once again the prevailing strong winds will be a major factor in splitting the race.

In addition to the six who competed in the time trial, Nico Barclay will join Smith and Hartwig in the 17/18 category. Racing begins at 8.00am with younger boys followed by the girls and then later in the morning the 17/18′s will tackle the same course.
