Minister Hails E-Waste Day “Great Success”

July 19, 2013

Trevor MonizOn Wednesday [July 17] Minister of Public Works Trevor Moniz hailed the e-Waste recycling day on Saturday [July 13] as a great success with more than 20,000 pounds of e-Waste collected.

Throughout the day, 190 vehicles arrived containing everything from toaster-ovens to flat-screen televisions, filling up just over one 20-foot-long shipping container or 20,000 pounds of worn-out electronics that will soon be on their way to a New Jersey based electronics recycling firm.

All recyclable materials exported from Bermuda, including e-Waste are sent to United States Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] approved recycling facilities to ensure they are handled with maximal concern for the environment and worker safety.

Minister Moniz said: “Clearly the Department of Waste Management’s effort to encourage Bermuda residents to properly recycle their electronic waste is bearing fruit. It is important to keep these items, some of which contain known toxins, out of our waste stream and airport landfill.”

In 2011/12 the Waste Management Section collected 134 x 20’ shipping container loads for recycling. Of the 134 containers, 84 were exported to the US recycling market and 50 container loads of crushed glass were used in local construction projects. Exported container loads of recycling comprised 18 containers of air conditioners, 26 containers of vehicle batteries, 4 containers of tin, 2 containers of aluminium, 11 containers of motor oil, 1 container of fluorescent tubes, 4 containers of transformers 1 container of household batteries and 17 containers of e-Waste.

Can he (or anyone) show us that the e-waste or the “recycle plant” has shown a single dollar of profit since its inception or is this just another “get it off our shores” plan, and talking of hazerdous waste what ever happened to all the burst open and rotted out containers of asbestos that Dr Evil and Zane tried to send to Cuba, still being blown around in the Bermuda breeze?
