Parks Dept: Fumigation Of Roundabout Soil

July 1, 2013

001_8011The roundabouts at Crow Lane and Trimingham Hill will be covered with tarpaulin for 14 days for fumigation, the Department of Parks said today [July 1].

The Department said they will be carrying out a fumigation treatment on the roundabouts due to the presence of a fungus in the soil which has a significant impact on the vitality and appearance of the bedding plants.

A spokesperson said, “The fungus is called sclerotinia and causes root, crown and stem rot in plants. Fumigation is one of the best treatment methods as it destroys the fungus which leads to the long term health and vitality of plants.

“Technical officers from the Department of Parks have already begun clearing the plants from the two roundabouts and dispersing the treatment. The area will then be covered with a tarpaulin for a period of approximately 14 days to allow the fumigation to occur.

“Then the soil will be allowed to breathe for a further 14 days before planting. Therefore the roundabouts will be without flowers for the next month once treatment begins.”
