Plough Weekend For St. George’s 401st Birthday

July 10, 2013

The St. George’s Business Development Association will be hosting the ”Plough Weekend” to celebrate St. George’s 401st birthday on Saturday [July 20] and Sunday [July 21].

The event organisers said, “In 1612, three years after the initial shipwreck that left Sir George Somers and group stranded on our shores and two years after they left, a group of 50 families came to settle Bermuda as an English colony, and established the Town of St. George.

“In 2012, The Town celebrated the 400th anniversary of that event with Plough Weekend, named after the settling ship that arrived in July 1612. And this year, the 2nd Annual Plough Celebrations will be held as St. George’s celebrates its 401st Birthday on July 20 and 21.

“Last year, the events were organised by the museum community, and this year, the St. George’s Business Development Association, a group of business owners in the town, decided to build on the event’s success and host it again.”

Organiser Kristin White explains, “The St. George’s BDA have been putting on various events throughout the year to get more residents and visitors come down. We don’t have any full-time event planners or anything like that here in St. George’s, so we all just chip in to create some energy and buzz, and get people excited about our beautiful town. Last year, as soon as Plough was over, I thought, this should be an annual event, so I wrote up a plan and took it to the St. George’s BDA. They agreed, and here we are! The museums are all on board again to help pull it together, so it’s going to be amazing!”!”

A spokesperson said, “On July 20, the events will run from 10 am to 6pm and will include many historical and cultural activities – films, tours, lectures, quizzes and reenactments. There will also be entertainment, and the stores and restaurants are getting involved too, with special demos, discounts, and samples. Plus all of the museums and galleries will be open, free of charge. The day will end with birthday song, and cake with the candles being blown out by parish MPs. The cake will then be cut by some of St. George’s oldest residents.

“On July 21, everyone is invited to worship at St. George’s churches, where many will include special acknowledgement of the Town’s birthday. And in the afternoon, museums and galleries, normally closed on Sundays, will be open, again free of charge. Additionally, there will be a few more tours on, and the Olde Towne Market will be running from 2 – 6 as well.”

Ms. White says, “We want to invite all of Bermuda to head east to celebrate. St. George’s is truly an incredible town, full of history, the heritage, and culture. And on Plough Weekend, this will all be on display.”
