30 Top Youth Footballers Selected For Clinic

August 27, 2013

Digicel Bermuda today [Aug 27] announced the 30 youth footballers selected to participate the Digicel Kick Start Clinic – an intense one-day training session with Chelsea FC Foundation coaches to be held on Friday, August 30th 2013.

After receiving nominations from local high schools, 45 athletes under the age of 16 participated in two pre-sessions held at the Bermuda Athletic Association [BAA] last month. Coach Maurice Lowe led the BAA’s coaching team in selecting the top 30 from the group of aspiring footballers.

On Friday, Chelsea FC coaches, David Monk, Russell Banyard and Kane Cowburn will provide firsthand practical experience and technical guidance while assessing the 30 footballers to ultimately select 3 to attend the Digicel Football Academy in Barbados.

Additionally, 20 of our island’s youth coaches will participate in a ‘Coach the Coach’ seminar on Saturday where the Chelsea FC coaches will demonstrate their latest training and coaching techniques. Both events will take place at the BAA.

“This opportunity to learn from top Premier League trainers is huge for Bermuda’s aspiring footballers,” comments Wayne Caines, CEO of Digicel Bermuda. “Living on such a small island, oftentimes our young people are discouraged when pursuing professional football career dreams due to our isolation. The Digicel Kick Start Programme was designed to expose grassroots footballers and set young, talented athletes on the right path.”

Shane Mora, Marketing Director of Digicel Bermuda adds, “The kids are excited about this weekend’s event, their parents are grateful for the opportunity and we are pleased to be able to deliver the experience.”

BBA President, John Doran comments, “The group of kids selected to participate in the clinic expressed a high level of enthusiasm and dedication to football. Our coaches were pleased with their efforts during the pre-sessions and have prepared the boys for what is expected this weekend.”
