Monica Spencer To Compete In Miss UNCF

August 9, 2013

A graduate of the Bermuda Institute and current junior at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama is set to compete in the Miss United Negro College Fund [UNCF] Scholarship Pageant, giving her the opportunity to gain recognition for her work in the scholastic community even as she raises money to help those without means to acquire a post-secondary education.

Monica Spencer, along with hundreds of other contestants from among the Historically Black Colleges and Universities of the United States will compete in an effort to raise funds that will go towards the UNCF scholarship, with the woman who raises the most money being crowned Miss UNCF.

For her part, Ms Spencer plans to work hard in order to take the crown, hoping to represent Bermuda and make the island proud as she does.

“Being crowned Miss UNCF is important to me not only because it stands as a reminder that not even the sky is the limit when God is in it, but also because I enjoy making a difference and positively influencing those around me,” she told Bernews. “This would provide me with more opportunities, allowing me to continue changing the world.”

“Being crowned Miss UNCF would also stand as an example to not only Bermuda, but the rest of the world, showing that whatever you put your mind to, you can and will achieve through God’s help.”

Last year’s pageant winner, Tanreka Smith, raised more than $33,000 towards the scholarship, setting the bar high for Monica Spencer and her fellow competitors.
