Philippe Cousteau To Give Talks On Island

Philippe Cousteau — grandson of renowned marine researcher and advocate Jacques Cousteau — will be visiting Bermuda later this week in order to talk about the idea of a marine reserve on the island, engaging the public in a series of public events.

Cousteau will host two public events on Thursday, August 8, aiming to interact with children and adults alike in an effort to get people excited about the prospect of a Bermudian marine reserve.

Event: Afternoon at the Aquarium with Philippe Cousteau
Where: Bermuda Aquarium
When: Thursday, August 8, 2-4 PM

At this first event, Cousteau will host children at the Bermuda Aquarium in order to teach them about the importance of protecting marine life, focusing on helping them to get excited about the unique roles that they can play in the process. Besides an entertaining talk, kids will also have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with with the marine life advocate.

With the island’s children left satisfied by the afternoon event, this public talk will give adults the opportunity to indulge in a cash bar, mingle with their peers, and take in a talk by Cousteau covering his global travels, the insight he’s gained from his grandfather, the importance of protecting marine life, and the Blue Halo project and what it could mean for Bermuda. The talk will end in an open question and answer session.

    The Blue Halo initiative represents a real opportunity in so many ways. Not only will it provide the necessary protection to the Sargasso Sea and stop illegal fishing, it could be a boon to tourism in that scientists and interested visitor groups can be attracted to the island. This is a good example of how/where we should be spending our dollars… keep the gambling in Vegas.
