Saturday [Aug 10] saw the always colorful and energetic Gombeys hit Queen Elizabeth Park [formerly Par-La-Ville Park] for their Saturday show. Visitors and locals alike stopped in their tracks when the sounds of the drumbeats and whistles could be heard. The Gombeys are now considered integral to the Bermuda culture but at one time in our history, they were actually banned by law after the Slave Revolt of 1761. The restriction was lifted later on, and today we see the Gombeys perform at many traditional Bermudian events. The Gombeys in the Park takes place every Saturday through the summer.
