Teen Charged With Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

August 8, 2013

An 17-year-old male — who cannot be named for legal reasons — appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug 8] where he faced charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of 13-year-old female.

The alleged offences were said to have occurred in May and June of this year, when the defendant was 17 years old.

He did not have to enter a plea as the matter must be heard in the Supreme Court. He was remanded into custody by Senior Magistrate Archie Warner, and is due to reappear later this month.

He was remanded into custody? Am I reading this right? I’m sorry, I will probably get some slams for this but I think this is plain WRONG. I understand that young ladies have to be protected from themselves, but this young man is only 17 himself. They are both TEENAGERS!!! If they are in the same age group and having sex, what is gained by locking him up? I would have no mercy if this was a grown a$$ man having sex with a young girl, but he is just a boy himself. They are peers, they probably go high school together- it’s not like he’s twice her age. Shouldn’t some type of counseling, therapy, etc be tried first? It really is time for this magistrate to go. If this were a 30 year old man he would probably give him bail and tell him to go home to his family.

16 is the age of legal consent for teens to have sex

@ Solutions….. Let’s see if you are singing the same song if it were your daughter. Lock his a** up yes!! Make an example of him!! If it were my son I would be the one locked up…cause I would beat him!! Only 17?? Play man, take man’s licks!!!

    • E$ says:

she’s 13 bra….would you let your kids do dat?!?!

      • Solutions says:

I am a female. She is 13, he was 17 at the time. Neither one should have been engaging in sexual activity, but he was still a teenager and close in age to her. I would have felt differently if he was a grown man, but he was still in his teens. He does not belong in jail…

        • Whistling Frog says:

My question is, what do the courts mean when they say they have to protect these young girls? and who are they protecting them from?

    • Toodle-oo says:

When you were 17 were you hanging around 13 year olds ?

    • Sense says:

Hi, hello. It is illegal to have sex under the age of 16. Does that answer your questions?

    • Real Talk (original) says:

Um. 13 and 17 are not ‘peers’.

  2. frank says:

why waste time in the lower court when they know that the case has to be tried on the hill

    • Terry says:

So where they gonna file charges.
      Speciality Inn or HSBC.?

      • Babs says:

If you dont have anything intelligent to say then stay away from your keyboard and spare us your silly comments.

  3. CONCERNED says:

teenagers should know this law – Parents/Guardians time to Step UP and TELL THEM and or REMIND THEM.

  4. ... says:

The girl…… This situation has most likely been blown way out of purportion and twisted to make the boy look bad and the girl look innocent. I don’t feel as if he deserves to be remanded into custody. Just ridiculous.

  5. Tell it says:

If guilty, I have no mercy or excuse for this young man and and his actions because the age is 16 and older, BUT parents (mothers) these girls need to be talked to because I often hear and see A LOT of young girls throwing themselves out there as if they were 16 and older…..JS…

    • E$ says:

ank dat d truth!! boys should kno betta but still…

  6. justMYopinion says:

The age of consent for males is actually different for that of a female, not sure if you all know this and you do not have to be over the age of 16.

In this case I am not going to take sides as I work with pre teens/teens and I am able to see things from both sides. They BOTH know better end of story and BOTH sexes need to be protected from each as we have have young people that can be predators and some that are promiscuous as well…

Parents need to talk to their sons AND daughters…..

  7. whatrthefacts says:

I have a son and a daughter. Did the boy know her true age? Did she lie? How developed is she? My daughter is petite and finished high school and working. However, she can easily pass for 14. My son isint even a teen and people swear hes 15. When I was 15 and in high schook my bf was 18 and working at the bank….we need to know the facts before we speak.

Stuff like this happens so often on this island that I’m starting to wonder if it’s culturally acceptable. Based on some of the comments I’ve read from this article(and other similar ones)many feel it’s “OK” based on the circumstances. It’s unfortunate but it may take a case like this to drive home the point that according to the LAW 13 year old CHILDREN, no matter how developed they are or how “grown” they act, can consent to have sex.
Parents need to educate their childeren on the consequences of underage sex until they’re blue in the face. And on the flip side these grown A@$ men using schools/bus stops etc as “hunting” grounds for young P___Y need to have an example made of them. Maybe then this epidemic will be stamped out.

  8. Come on! says:

So two teenagers cant allegedly have sex but a man can beat a kid with a cricket bat and that is ok? This magistrate is off his rocker and must be on the swizzle or something. 13 and 17 most definitely are peers. I don’t think this calls for jail time, it seems a bit excessive! How about proper education in schools?

  9. Second says:

Let’s stop confusing teenagers sneaking around to have sex ,with sexual predators. Young men are being stigmatized on this small island because of mistakes they made with a young girl when the boy was 16 yrs old and the girl 13/14 years, but for some reason the court case is delayed until the same young man is on the verge of turning 18 years. He is placed in jail and the girls are known to continue their ways in most cases. Boys snd girls of these age groups have and will continue to be sexually active but I question whether punishing the boys only in such a manner as prison and not holding the girls accountable is the right thing? Maybe such cases should be in family court and forms of community service considered. Older men with little / younger girls should not be tolerated, Perverts need to be dealt with . Lets help our teens rather being so quick to punish and stigmatize. Laws need to be reviewed.

  10. anonymous 1 says:

This is bullsh** how are you going to lock up this boy for allegedly having sex with this 13 year old who clearly knew what she was doing.

  11. whoa says:

I can’t believe some of the comments I am reading defending the 17 year old. Even if a younger girl is flirting and throwning herself at a older man it doesnt matter! And it is not her FAULT, the man has to step up and say NO!
DOesnt matter if she knew what she was doing or not if you are old enough and know it is wrong DON’t do it!

I can’t believe some of these comments!

  12. Z says:

He, like the adults should be named, If he thinks he can act in this disgusting manner start treating him like an adult.

  13. Well... says:

It takes two to tango. Both children should be held accountable.
