Canadian Visitor Provided Accommodation In Jail

September 10, 2013

When sixty-five year old Canadian visitor Neil Crane appeared, in Police custody, in Monday’s [Sept 9] Plea Court, Crane pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving Clearview Suites without paying a $8,409.49 accommodation charge.

Crown Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the Senior Magistrate that Crane had checked into Clearview on 5th July and had left Clearview on 7th September. Police had found Mr Crane at the LF Wade Airport on 7th September.

Mr Crane told the Magistrate that he “thought he was a guest at the hotel and that somebody else was paying his hotel bill for him.” He also told the Magistrate that he thought that hotel bills could be paid within thirty days.

He asked the Magistrate: “If I can make restitution today, can I go?”. Ms Clarke told the Magistrate that as far as she knew, Mr Crane’s restitution plan required that must first fly back to Canada.

Magistrate Warner told Mr Crane that restitution would likely make a difference in his sentence, but that he could not be allowed to return to Canada at this stage. Magistrate Warner then said that he would adjourn the matter for a week and would also provide accommodation. Mr Crane was remanded into custody until 16th September.

Sadly ‘accommodation’ as a description for Westgate fails the satire test due to it’s appropriateness and accuracy.

@Um, Yes, really, why didn’t Clearview request some $$ within a two month period? I guess I would have started to think I was a “guest” as well! The whole thing sounds incredible.

I guess he believes that all Bermudians are as NICE/crazy as Clearview was for letting him get off with staying there for as long as he did without asking him to put or be put de hell out! So he thought to check/slip out and make a run for it.. Great work BPS.. Nailed his arse. C-A-C’s don’t tip either!
