Premier Cannonier To Attend Gibraltar Meetings

September 8, 2013

The Cabinet Office advised today [Sept 8] that the Premier, Craig Cannonier, will attend a series of meetings in Gibraltar this week with leaders from the Overseas Territories in preparation for a Joint Ministerial Council [JMC] meeting, which will be held in London in November.

The invitation to attend the meeting came at the request and expense of the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo MP.

Premier Cannonier said, “The meetings are important to attend as leaders of the Overseas Territories will meet to set the agenda regarding global and domestic issues of commonality within the JMC by working in partnership with UK Ministers at Whitehall.”

As President of the Political Council of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association, Premier Cannonier will also convene a meeting for its members while in Gibraltar.

Accompanying the Premier to the meetings will be Kimberley Durrant, UK Representative from the Government of Bermuda’s, London Office.

  1. Impressive says:

okay,, now the race begins, where are all the OBA supporters complaining of why the Premier has to travel to Gibraltar for a nothing trip??? I wait by my computer with eager anticipation..

Not to mention that our beloved Premier is not smart enough to even comprehend the discussions that will take place, i wonder if his group of advisers will attend the meetings with him. he will need someone to break things down so he can understand after all. smdh

    • Black Soil says:

You are comparing this to when brother Lister and his ace boys flew to Florida at the taxpayers expense to see the space shuttle take off? – smdh

      • Concerned Citizen says:

Nobody cares about Terry and his stupid spaceship junket! Lol!

    • Did you read the article? says:

It very clearly states that the travel is at the expense of Gibraltar.

  2. SoMuchMore says:

should send the milk man instead, worth every penny.

  3. Mike Hind says:

    So much hate…

  4. Lay down! says:

Aint half as bad as going to the playboy mansion! Maybe some the plp supports can break that down for me. Nor am i plp or oba F*** party politics!

  5. Ridiculous says:

    Wasting money!

Is he and all the Ministers and Senators required to give up the 1 day’s pay per month for 2 years like all the civil servants? If yes they should give up 5 days a month’s pay. Curious.

  6. Should leaders of the Overseas Territories gather to discuss and agree on a combined approach when dealing with the Foreign Office? The Premier has an obligation to ensure that Bermuda’s voice is heard. Since the request came from the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, I surmise that there are issues on the table that our government should at least hear. The question is simple: ‘Is it in the best interest of the people of Bermuda to be represented at such gatherings? One of the issues I hope our Premier raises is that of Bermuda Passports not being accepted by E.U. States. Anyone traveling to Europe, outside of the UK, must obtain a visa or face being deported back from whence they came, at their expense! So, I am absolutely in support of our Premier and his – reasonable number – delegation attending such events.

    • Concerned Citizen says:

Unfortunately, we all know that he is not capable of making a meaningful contribution, and neither can the Milk Man. Minister Bob, and Minister Grant can, I’m sure, but it seems as though Kimberly Durrant has a lot of work to do. Good thing she is capable, because otherwise, Craig is just going on another trip. Btw, I doubt Gibralter paid for his airfare! Randy, all the issues you raise are important, the problem is we have a student pilot trying to fly a 737! Understand?

      • Mike Hind says:

        STILL with this silly game?
You guys are trying really hard to push this “The Premier doesn’t know anything and has to be told what to say” thing.

Is this seriously ALL you guys have?

It’s pretty sad… but I guess good for the country that all you demagogues have on the Government is this sort or ridiculous smear.

      • J. Carlington says:

Is someone having a laugh……..Kimberely Durrant capable of what?

    • Impressive says:

i agree that we need to be represented for what its worth, but is out premier the one to send?? really?? AS Concerned Citizen has stated, do you think he is really capable of making an impact??

  7. Robert says:

Oh lord, i hope he takes a spokesperson with him, if not we are sunk !!!

  8. Tiptoes says:

OBA , please, please make should he packs a muzzle.

  9. J Starling says:

I don’t have too big an issue with this, per se, but just as with the PLP, haven’t they heard of something called ‘teleconferencing’? Some trips are necessary and all very well and good, but even if Gibraltar is paying, I hope we move to more teleconferencing and less travel going forward.

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

As always Jonathan, what startles me is that you never mentioned this when the PLP was travelling the world. India to drum up film business and do deals with generic drug makers, the Middle East to drum up Islamic finance, Paris to attend space ship meetings, Florida for shuttle launches, the Bahamas to look at docks, New York to accept a Women’s Award, San Francisco to accept a Women’s Award, the Bahamas to accept a women’s Award. Perhaps some of these could have been done by teleconferencing, or maybe the Women’s Awards could have been couriered?

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

When is he going off to Bollywood, or China, or Dubai or or or or with absolutely no reason that will benefit Bermuda? Then I will complain. Till then, let him get on with the job. He may not be a world statesman but he sure is better than the last collection that has trotted off in the past 14 years.

    • Concerned Citizen says:

Triangle lying to himself again! Haha. Get on with the Job? Right! Lol, if he only had the ability!

      • Mike Hind says:

        Good redirect of the point.

It’s complete nonsense, but a good redirect.

        • Hmmmmm says:

To borrow from your own lips…where’s your evidence of this Premier’s competence?

          • Zombie Apocalypse says:

How about running a successful business?

            • Hmmmmm says:

Would that be the business that runs of out its main stock item at least once a month? Oh ok. Next.

              • Zombie Apocalypse says:

A business that employs dozens of people and continues to expand. Next.

I’d compare that to the shadow finance minister, who’s family construction business went broke, and who’s latest business venture was illegally selling repackaged booze on the internet. Where’s evidence of his competence?

And where’s evidence of Marc Bean’s competence? A pilot licence?

          • Mike Hind says:

Easy. His side beat your side.

Where’s your evidence of his incompetence?

  11. S Smith says:

The last time this man went to Europe we ended up in the global news for the wrong reasons because he stared spouting off. Please make sure that he doesn’t say anything.

  12. Kiskadee says:

I hope he is going a couple of days early as BA could be cancelled or delayed ! Maybe if it is he might do something about finding us another airline..

  13. Amazed says:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the leader of the country attending these kinds of events and there never was! That said, I doubt that Gibraltar is covering all his expenses as this would not make any kind of sense given the stated purpose of the meeting. I am sure the people of Gibraltar dont want their government wasting money any more than we do.

  14. Just wondering says:

So the Premier will be accompanied by a UK representative from the Government of Bda’s London office and HIS expenses will be paid for by Gibraltar. What the article failed to indicate is if the Premier is traveling by himself (leaving Bermuda) or will he have his troupes with him. If that’s the case, their travel expenses will be at our cost – tax payers.

  15. Tolerate says:

    Wow,
“The invitation to attend the meeting came at the request and expense of the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo MP”

“As President of the Political Council of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association, Premier Cannonier will also convene a meeting for its members while in Gibraltar”.

You haters are f@#k!NG idiots. Do you even read the articles or just get as far as the headline.

Sounds like killing two birds with one stone and at the expense (at least partial) on the host nation.

Bermuda is screwed with such @$$3$
    Go Sleep!!!!

  16. E$ says:

TOO ALL YOU PLP DUMMIES OUT DER:

“The invitation to attend the meeting came at the request and expense of the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo MP.”

    • Concerned Citizen says:

You Oba folk have no idea how govt works! Your ignorance is not even funny!
