Video: PLP Concerned About CCTV Operations
Shadow Minister Michael Weeks was today [Sept 9] joined by Shadow Public Safety Minister Michael Scott and Shadow Minister Walter Roban to express comfort and reassurance to the community at the forefront of gang violence.
Shadow Minister Weeks called on the Minister of Public Safety to confirm whether the CCTV cameras in the area of The Glebe Road were working or not.
Shadow Minister Michael Weeks said, “We called a press conference today to provide comfort, direction and reassurance to the community at the forefront of gang violence.
“My colleagues and I are working with the entire community to find solutions. We are taking special care to work with all concerned, especially the families of the victims and those of the alleged perpetrators, many of whom ironically enough, are related.
“We are all too aware of the challenges, heartbreak, loss and fear that many of our neighbours are going through. That’s why, as Ministers, Walter Roban and I fought for and got CCTV cameras and improved lighting for our constituents. We also worked with the police to obtain increased patrols and establish neighborhood watch programmes in an effort to make this community safe.
“The news that this CCTV camera on this sight of this vicious murder may not have been operational at the time of the shooting fills me with rage. After making numerous inquiries, we still have not received a straight answer as to whether these cameras are working or not.
“The war on crime and gun violence only works if the community, the police, the courts and the government are all doing their part. This is unacceptable.
“Our people need a straight answer: To the Minister of Public Safety, the individual responsible for the maintenance of these cameras, we have one simple question. Are these cameras working?
“Visiting this community or only thinking of the needs of this community during times of tragedy simply isn’t good enough. As area MPs we a committed to our community 24/7, 365 and are encouraging the OBA to share our commitment and work with us to address security in this area. Glebe Road, Friswells Hill and Government Gate need the same attention afforded other areas in Bermuda, not less.
“We call on the OBA to ensure these CCTV cameras are working and are properly maintained. We further ask that our community receives the same sustained attention that other communities receive as we fight to make life better and safer for all of us”.
In response to CCTV concerns raised today by the Opposition, the Minister of Public Safety Michael Dunkley said, “I am somewhat surprised to learn of the comments in the press conference today as it was Mr. Weeks who last week confirmed that the cameras were working, so his comments today are at variance with that position.
“As the area’s MPs and the Shadow Minister will know, the CCTV network is monitored and maintained regularly. There are occasional outages due to transmission failure and other factors.
“Those outages should be addressed swiftly by the service provider and service restored promptly. The investigation into the senseless murder of Mr. Dill is active and any comment on the specifics of the cameras in that area could prejudice the extremely hard work being done presently by the Police.
“I can say however, that I have been advised that there is CCTV coverage in the area in question and an examination of the footage is forming part of the ongoing investigation.”

Not just the PLP who are concerned about it, where’s all the police budget going, certainly not on the maintenance or operation of any camera systems, also who got the contract to install and maintain these systems could it be the same people that were given without tender the security at the new court, it kind of smells like the rather expensive and equally useless RFID system that was installed.
if you had a clue you’d realise that the cameras are managed and maintained by a company who was given a contract by the PLP government and whos director is a certain PLP insider who could never win an election but who kept geting high profile ministirial jobs.
The police have very little to do with the day to day operations of the CCTV systems
The PLP know EXACTLY what’s going on with the CCTV cameras. They know this is a dog & pony show to make folks think the OBA don’t care.
I cannot believe those 3 clowns. Were they like the 3 BLIND MICE under their watch? how many times did the mobile unit sit empty on Pond Hill and other areas? How many of the CCTV Cameras actually work?

In his defense Mr. Weeks said “he believed” the cameras were working. He didn’t confirm.

Please send a dossier of evidence to folks higher up than those who you speak of and have these people destroyed, because if it is as you say then get on and do something about it. The shadow ministers should go on record and enlighten us on how many days/weeks/months these cameras were actually functional while they were the government…

Well, from this morning’s news it appears the cameras are working. So the three stooges apparently were “concerned” about nothing. Still, all they wanted was a photo op, a chance to make it look like they were “doing something”, and a chance to take a cheap shot at the government. As it turns out, they just made themselves look silly.
