Anglican Church “Growing Leaders” Seminar

October 22, 2013

179The Anglican Church of Bermuda is announcing a renewed effort to encourage Bermudians to explore the Leadership opportunities in the church.

The Anglican Church of Bermuda, which has traditionally relied upon overseas priests [often serving short terms] for its leadership, is starting this renewal by holding 4 days of support and training in the development of persons for a variety of ministries in the church.

These training opportunities will take place over the 27th – 30th October 2013 and will be led by the Rev. James Lawrence. Rev. Lawrence, 49, is the Leadership Principal at the Anglican mission agency The Church Pastoral Aid Society [CPAS] and overall leader of the Arrow Leadership Programme [UK].

He is author of several books and courses, including Growing Leaders and Mentoring Matters. He teaches and trains on leadership and evangelism in the UK and around the world. He is passionate about resourcing the local church to be well led and mission focused, and is married, has three children and he loves ironing!

Bishop Nick Dill, a graduate of the Arrow Leadership Programme, stated, “James Lawrence has been influential in shaping my leadership style. He combines a love for Jesus with humility and courage in leadership – challenging us to always do better, to commit ourselves to lifelong learning and to think outside the box. But the greatest thing that James taught was that in order to be a leader you first had to be led by Jesus yourself, then to consciously lead more like Jesus as you led people to Jesus.”

During his time in Bermuda, Rev. Lawrence will preach at the Cathedral, and lead discussion and training sessions with the Anglican Church’s Advisory Board for Ministry and Clergy. On Wednesday 30th October at 7:00pm in the Cathedral Hall on Church Street, he will present a training programme entitled “Growing Leaders”. The Growing Leaders course focuses on developing leaders across the life of the church, and provides practical resources for running a leadership development process over a year.

The course is designed to encourage a range of Leaders within the church, not just clergy. “It is too easy for us simply to become professional which, can lead to burn out or detachment. True leadership is always servant leadership and relational,” said Bishop Nick. “James has been to Bermuda once before to help the Diocese think about evangelism. Now his focus in on training and encouraging leadership at every level of the Church, young and old in every aspect of ministry.”

All those interested in seeing leadership developed further in the Bermudian church – whether Anglicans or members of other Christian churches – are invited to attend this event. All those wishing to come along are invited to register their attendance with the Diocesan Office by emailing diocese@anglican.bm or telephoning 292-6987. The event is free to Anglicans and $25 to all others.
