Conditional Discharge: Stealing $18 Of Codfish

October 30, 2013

A 60 year old man was given a Conditional Discharge in Magistrates Court this morning [Oct 30] after he pleaded guilty to stealing $17.98 worth of codfish from the Marketplace.

Stephen Pitt pleaded guilty to stealing two packages of codfish on 7th March 2013.

Replying to Senior Magistrate Archie Warner’s question, Mr Pitt said that he had taken the two packages because he was hungry but that he’d given them back on the same day. The Magistrate countered with: “Why steal codfish?”

Before sentencing him, the Senior Magistrate reviewed Mr Pitt’s record and said that his record for this kind of offence went back to the 1960′s.

He said that he noted that there had been no offences since 2005. He asked Mr Pitt: “What have you been doing since 2005?”

Pitt replied that he had been working on the Hustle Truck since 2005 and he had also been doing odd jobs, here and there, since then.

Saying: “…you’re getting too old for this..”, the Magistrate handed down his decision of a Conditional Discharge for twelve months. He warned Mr Pitt that he needed to ensure that he did not commit any further offence within that time.

    Something fishy going on here

  8. Prayerful says:

I guess he returned the codfish because he had nowhere to cook it. There are too many hungry people around.

Yesterday one of the newspapers listed places on the island, from Somerset to St. George’s where people can get free food.

  9. William says:

if the price of codfish is so high perhaps the thieves are the ones who have disguised their activities as taxation against bread.
