TCI AG Resigns, Intends To Start Legal Action

October 31, 2013

Turks and Caicos Islands Attorney General Huw Shepheard — who previously worked in Bermuda — has tendered his resignation and intends to start legal action against the TCI Government.

The decision comes a few months after Mr Shepheard’s term, which started in 2010, had been extended 36 months to 2016.

Mr Shepheard and the recently-elected TCI government led by Premier Dr Rufus Ewing have had what has been termed a “frequently tumultuous relationship.”

A statement released yesterday from the TCI Premier’s office said, “The Government can confirm that we were informed by the Governor, of the Attorney General’s intention to resign from his post in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

“While we have not been informed of the Governor’s office being in receipt of the official document, we have reasons to believe that Huw Shepherd has in fact tendered his resignation to the Governor’s Office this morning, to become effective November 1, 2013.

“We can further confirm that Huw Shepherd has indicated his intent to bring legal proceedings against the Government in respect to his tenure and as such we can provide no further comment on this matter, except to say that the Government will seek legal guidance in our response should defense of the Government becomes necessary.”

A statement from the TCI Governor’s office said, “The Attorney General, Huw Shepheard, has tended his resignation effective November 1 2013.

“He has also given notice of his intention to file legal charges against the TCI Government for reputational and other damages. Since this matter is now subject to legal proceedings this Office cannot comment any further.

“TCIG is keen to ensure that the work of the Attorney General’s Chambers continues to progress, and as such Rhondalee Braithwaite will be sworn in as Acting Attorney General. Work will begin soon to find a substantive successor.”

Anyone who might think that the alleged transgressions of former Bermuda Government officials will ever be fully exposed and tried, should take a long look at what the British and TCI have faced in their ongoing troubles. In my opinion, the Governor and the legal authorities here will go to any length to avoid the damage to Bermuda’s reputation that would follow a concerted effort to bring justice. Transparency and a real 21st century approach to the avoidance of corruption are not forthcoming, partly due to the fallout that such an effort would create. Corruption laws concerning the Government and the legal system are a travesty by modern standards. Welcome to Colonial Britain. Enjoy your stay.

STFU and stop picking at scabes. If we went back under the PLP and former UBP we would find out many wrongs.

We can only hope that the OBA get it right a learn from past mistakes/politricks!

You did get one part absolutely right. You can only hope. That’s all you can do, because you have no legal assurance that anyone will do the right thing.
