Video: Future Of Bermuda’s Marine EEZ Zone

October 25, 2013

Last night [Oct 24] ZBM aired a 30-minute programme on the future of Bermuda’s Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ], and for those that missed it a replay is below.

Produced by Method Media for the Department of Sustainable Development, the video covers the possibilities of protecting a portion of our EEZ.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Bermuda has special rights over the exploration and use of the natural resources within our EEZ, including managing and conserving those resources.

Our EEZ is essentially a circle with a 200 nautical mile radius that covers approximately 460 thousand square km of ocean. This area is more than twice the size of England, Scotland and Wales combined.

The Department of Sustainable Development is presently holding a consultation period to get the public’s feedback on whether a marine reserve is the right option for the future protection of Bermuda’s waters.

The 30 minute video is below:

I don’t like how Dr. Saul only speaks of money! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity – no – a once in an infinite timeline to manage and protect what belongs to us! It belongs to us and right now it is not protected nor managed. Please vote online! http://www.sdbermuda.bm

Why isn’t this being put to referendum? It is a very important decision!!!

Kathy, you are missing some important information. It is protected, government issues fishing licenses and very few of them so it is managed. Giving PEW what they want would be giving it away and out of our control or more like taking it away from our children. Don’t be fouled by the PEW!

      • really says:

That is completely false. The Bermuda Government have absolute control of any marine reserve in the EEZ. That includes the ability to reverse it in the future.

        • mangrove tree says:

Bermuda only has control if it can actually enforce the area.

This video is very disappointing in helping the public understand the importance of this issue. It only asks the obvious questions and makes very general comments. It makes little attempt to consider the hard details of the arguments for and against a “no take” marine park.

We should do nothing until this subject is properly researched and presented to the public in a way so that it can have a reasoned and educated opinion.

Don’t let the guys with $$$$$$$$ cloud your judgement Bermuda!! Make slooow comprehensive decisions and get ALL the facts FIRST!

To put in place a so-called blue halo will only assure that Bermuda makes one or two appearances on the National Geographic channel and will do nothing for future economic prospects for Bermuda’s EEZ.
There are some powerful interests surrounding the campaign to turn Bermuda’s EEZ into a sterile economic zone with no economic benefit for the future of Bermuda. Talk about creating a so-called tourist attraction on the order of the great barrier reefs of Australia is a myth. The great barrier reefs can be seen from space; the only thing that can be seen in the waters around Bermuda is a great expansion of ocean; hardly a tourist attraction on the order of the great barrier reefs of Australia. We should not be fooled. What can be caught in Bermuda’s EEZ and what could be possibly mined under that area’s sea bed; hold the prospect of creating A third economic leg for Bermuda and holds a far greater value than making appearances on the National Geographic channel.
