Bermuda Post Office Advisory: Import Guidelines

November 26, 2013

box postal mail genericThe Bermuda Post Office [BPO] said they would like to advise the public that the BPO acts as an agent for HM Customs for the collection of duty on goods received through the post office.

A spokesperson said, “If you receive a notification from the post office indicating “value required”, you must produce the actual invoice when collecting your package and pay the required duty as per the Customs Revenue Act 1898.

“If you do not have an invoice you may provide the Post Office with a vendor or manufacturer estimated retail value for the item or similar product. This can be obtained from the Internet and presented in lieu of the actual invoice.

“There is a $30 duty free allowance on gifts received from overseas via the post office. For gifts estimated to exceed $30 in value, the provisions as set out in the above paragraph apply.

“If you have a reason to believe you are not liable for duty on any goods received, the Post Office will be happy to arrange for a HM Customs Office to inspect the package in your presence to determine whether the contents are subject to duty.

“The Bermuda Post Office would also like to remind the public that the following items are available for sale at post office locations island wide: stamps, stamp booklets, First Day Covers, BPO souvenirs and collectors items, assorted shipping boxes, mailing tubes, mail boxes, bubble wrap and business envelopes.”

But whatever you do NEVER get an unsolicited gift, these idiots will hold you and your gift until you come up with an invoice, this is a stupid policy upheld by stupid people, I had something sent to me (corporate branded) and they asked me for an invoice, I spent about an hour calling around this huge corporation trying to find the sender but never did, I tried to talk to the less than business types at the post office but gave up, what then do they do with these things, send them back or take them home? It’s no wonder they are slowly going out of business

Getting baked goods is an interesting adventure as well… always fun trying to put a price on Grandma’s cookies for the holiday.
