Old Sonesta To Possibly Be Used As Beach Club

November 18, 2013

The Green Family announced that they are considering plans to redevelop part of the old Sonesta Beach Hotel property as a beach club for The Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

The Greens purchased the property earlier this year, which followed after their purchase of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in 2012.

The family explained that if carried out, the new private members club would be located on Boat Bay Beach, which is one of three beaches on the property, and would consist of a restaurant/bar, beach, gym, spa and tennis courts.

In addition, the beach could have a small dock for water sport activities. The grounds already have undergone infrastructure work including new roads and landscaping. The entire project could possibly be completed by Spring 2015, the Greens said.

Alexander Green, on behalf of the family, says: “We are looking at numerous options for the property and still in the early stages of planning.

“We are excited to share our initial vision for the Southampton Beach property and we look forward to providing more updates once we finalise any plans.”

Andrew Green also commented that: “Our immediate goal for the property is enhance The Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

“The addition of the beach facilities will allow us to offer the best of both worlds, with the convenience of being located in town and access to stunning private beaches.”

Keeping Bermudians employed thank you Green Family

    • Sense says:

Employed in low-paying jobs catering to the rich by providing towels and daquiris. Wake me up when someone does something with a long-term vision for young Bermudians.

      • Nuffin but da Truth says:

Ignore the twat above, hasnt a clue about starting at the bottom and working his way up.

      • and then? says:

Well, if so many Bermudians have been out of work for so long perhaps some of us need to get off our high horses and take some of these jobs to make ends meet instead of sitting around complaining about “foreigners comin hur to take our joabs”. And yes I am a Bermudian who has been laid of with a degree (which I paid for myself) and had to take a lower paying job to make ends meet, until after a year of hard work and determination was able to find something in my field again.

Sense..why don’t you wake yourself up and share your ideas on how young Bermudians can get the jobs we deserve? What the Green’s and others have been doing is exactly what we need to stimulate our economy and supply Bermudians with a number of job opportunities.

        • Mazumbo says:

That’s the problem with us as Bermudians , the price for goods is sky high and the pay is dirt low ,if I was a foreigner making a hundred dollars a week in my country and coming to a place to make 4 hundred a week that’s fine but to conform Bermudians to that same wage scale is a slap in the face after we fought hard for decades to earn a descent wage. The cost of living keeps rising and they want to pay Third World wages that’s pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • jt says:

If most anyone can do a particular job the wage reflects that. It’s the same everywhere. You don’t work at McDonalds and have free cash to spend. This has been the incentive for many to improve their situation through training and education. Do it and move on or don;t do it and don;t moan. There are ways for individuals to help themselves and get around this.

            • Mazumbo says:

Hey yo, I don’t know how long you’ve been working or how long your been in Bermuda, but since Organized Labor has been in place the wages have always been compatible with the cost of living but greedy employers have figured out that they can import Cheap labor and make a bigger profit margin , it has nothing to do with the level of work, from a labor to a top grade mechanic was making a sustainable wage according to the rate of inflation and the cost of living, that’s how wages are determined. But like I said GREED has altered that process due to some employers who feel they can lower the standard of living to adjust to those less fortunate than us who don’t mind.

              • jt says:

Wages are consistent with the level of work being performed (CS excepted it would seem). I’ve lived in Bermuda 25 years and in North America for the same – that’s the way it is. Employers don’t pay people to insure this or that standard of living. If not many people can do your job and/or you are exceptional at a highly desired skill you make more money. If you don’t like it work hard, open your own business and pay you employees whatever they feel they need to achieve their desired standard of living.
As for foreign labour – that is an issue for the government to solve. It looks like the OBA is trying to crack down on the deluge of blue collar workers allowed in by the PLP. We shall see.

        • Bermuda says:

          PREACH GIRL.

People want a job but they don’t wanna work!!

      • JJ says:

And what are you doing? Small minded fool.

      • jt says:

So the jobs you mention would suit no Bermudians and they are the only type of job that will come from the Green investments? Get real.

Only but a handful of positions that would become available, many of which pay rather nicely.

        • Rick Olson says:

There are some people who just don’t get it but that is ok more opportunity to those that really want to excell

      • filobedo21 says:

@Sense, wether the workers are non-Bdn or local they will be unionised workers.Duh! i don’t see you borrowing money to provide well paying jobs for your fellow Bermuudians. Probably just another complainer without what do they say a pot and no widnow to throw it out of… or something like that. Pathetic!

      • FrankTalk says:

Actually higlights of the elements which lead to the demise of tourism in Bermuda.

While there is an undeniable boost in the initial construction, on an ongoing basis tourism as an industry requires relatively low wage costs and seasonal workers.

Juxtaposed against the relatively high wages – and consequnetial price inflation – of IB, tourism doesn’t do the trick.

        Quite the conundrum…..

      • Say Say Say says:

The long term vision for young Bermudians is, and always has been, do something for yourself – don’t expect someone else to hand you everything on a plate. You are entitled to nothing so get up and do something to make your life better instead of moaning like a spoilt child.

      • Winnie Dread says:

Ok Sense here is some good sense for you. Obviously you know nothing how Bermuda or a business operates. Only thing you can see is the so called low ‘paying’ job which is always better than a no ‘paying’. There is a thing called support services for example the Hamilton Princess.

        Bermuda Gas: 2 500gl Tubes

Esso Bermuda:Fuel couple thousand gallons every week

Food: B&V, Viking, BIE, Dunkleys, Outerbridge, Amber, BGA, Bda Coffee, Local Farmers, Europa, MEF, Pitt & Co, Cake Shop plus others

Wines and Spirits: Goslings,Burrows,Bristol,Discovery plus other

Technical Goods and Services: AF Smith must have toner and keep the copiers running, Electronic Services Ltd have to have microphones and big screens at the various meetings ect.

Local Entertainers:All summer at the various functions

Forwarders: Everything is imported have to have someone to get it to the location.

Insurance: Oh yes must have, property, personal, ect.

Lights: Oh think your ‘lectric’ bill is high

        Trash/Recycle Disposal: Hunts, QRS

        Payroll Tax: Speaks for itself

        Customs Duty: Speaks for itself

Carpet Laying: when it happens it happens BIG

        Contract Cleaners: Speaks for itself

Employment: Close to 300 full and partimers

This is just a snippet of what goes on, so don’t believe the hype. Do you see the whole chain of events and how it works for the benefit of Bermudians.

      • Really?? says:

At “SENSE”! Common SENSE isn’t so common after all…right SENCE!!?? Don’t be so silly fool!

      • Sara says:

What a horrible attitude. How many jobs have you created lately? And what are the salaries?

      • Smith's Parish Mom says:

Why don’t you wake up now….and start being PROACTIVE instead of reactive. Remember, God helps those who take steps to help themselves.

  4. Um Um Like says:

Hurry up and change the law so that the Greens can also build a casino on this site!

    • swing voter says:

or eventually sell the site to a multi billion dollar global mega resort chain that will come with loads of investment money, to develop an Atlantis project perhaps?

  5. Kindley says:

Building a casino would not be a good idea. Don’t cheapen your beautiful island by making it Las Vegas.

Making the island more affordable would be nice. Plenty of places for the rich, but not that many for the not so rich.

    • Um Um Like says:

Don’t cheapen it? Make it more affordable?

    • Mike Hind says:

How are we supposed to make It affordable without investments in our hotels… Something that won’t happen until we have gaming?

Saying “make it affordable” is all well and good, but, unless you have a way to do it that doesn’t involve gaming, it’s just not possible.

  6. Really?? says:

I’m happy to say this that “The Greene Family” are for B’dians and are trying to make jobs available for those that are currently unemployed. Good luck and I wish those B’dians that are unemployed all the best in finding employment because we all have to live and make ends meet with that “kick around change”. :)

  7. Say Say Say says:

Kindley: Can you please list all your great alternative ideas – if a Casino is going to be so bad for us. I hope your ideas involve more than saying praying for things to get better (in other words doing nothing).

  8. bluebird says:

The Greens are Bermudian, and I don’t think they will build another “HOTEL” as they have one.
NO OUTSIDERS are going to invest in Bermuda for a couple of reasons.
We have HUGE government for such a piddly little island of 65,000 pop.
Our TAXES are too HIGH therefore making it “EXSPENSIVE” to do business.
Our TAXES are too HIGH therefore making “ELECTRIC” and “GOSOLINE” very exspensive, making it “EXSPENSIVE” to do Business.
And our economy will continue to “DECLINE” less Government revenue and the loss of more “JOBS”

    • Oh well says:

      @bluebird,

you forgot to mention that our workforce is not educated well enough to warrant foreign investment. Oh wait, maybe you did….

  9. Upsetwithverdict says:

Instead of complaining could we just be thankful that the Green Family is investing their money at home and not taking it elsewhere and along with providing jobs. At least it will be a great boost to the economy. I am glad they see potential in Bermuda cause they could have easily done these investments anywhere in the world and they choose their home.

  10. Bermuda123 says:

The Green family are demonstrating faith in Bermuda. Thanks to them for that and good luck for the future

  11. Realist says:

    Bluebird,you are on the money.
Unless drastic changes to the immigration laws are introduced,Bermuda is finished.Next election there will be enough fools to vote in the foolish govt. The money people will go(their money is already gone),and the new govt’s generals will rob who is left.Third world status, poverty, crime ridden and an unsafe island will all that will be left. Those civil servants will be taking home the equivalent of $50usd a week.No more trips to the US malls. It is going to happen unless the present govt has the balls to cut expenditure and get our fiscal house in order.2 more years, and you will see which direction Bermuda will be headed in.Until then, pray for a miracle!

  12. Common Sense says:

One thing that no-one seems to have mentioned here is what a fantastic change the Green’s have already made in cleaning up the old Sonesta Beach site. Instead of a run down old bulding site with rubble all over the place, which is what we have down east – we now have a beautifully restored area which appears to also be environmentally friendly.

Good luck to the Green’s in developing this site even it they start out with a beach club to enhance the Southampton Princess property which is our premier hotel and needs to thrive if our touriam industry is to survive.

At least we are now seeing evidence of progress.

  13. street wise says:

This plan by the Greens does not put heads in beds. A spectacular new hotel must be built on that magnificent property that WILL put heads in beds. Then we all win. Just sayin’….

    • Mike Hind says:

      Won’t happen without gaming, sadly.

    • Fred says:

This is the nices setting for a hotel in Bermuda, build a large property with affortable rates.( Bermudas image is that of a very expensive destination )
