Ministry Cautions Against Use Of “OxyElite Pro”

December 24, 2013

usp_labs_oxy_elite_pro2-300x300The Ministry of Health and Environment said it would like to advise the public that it is  ”currently in the process of requesting voluntary removal of the product ‘OxyElite Pro’ from pharmacy and health food store shelves in Bermuda due to recent serious health concerns relating to this product in other jurisdictions.”

A Government spokesperson said, “In some instances use of the product has resulted in serious illness, including liver damage and liver failure.

“Due to these potential risks, the Ministry of Health and Environment cautions the public against the use of this product.

“It is recommended that any member of the public who is in possession of the supplement cease taking it immediately.

“This alert has been posted on the International Health Regulations events website.

“As of December 11th 2013, there have been 72 cases of acute non-viral hepatitis with an unknown cause subsequent to the use of the weight loss/muscle building dietary supplement products labeled as OxyElite Pro – with most cases being recorded in Hawaii.

“As reports of possible cases and cases themselves appear to have tapered off, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stopped surveillance efforts for dietary supplement-related hepatitis on December 5th 2013, but continues to follow up on reports received prior to that date.

“Both Hawaii’s Department of Health and the Department of Defense are moving forward with plans for case-control studies to further examine risk factors for illness.

“The FDA has analyzed several OxyElite Pro samples of recalled product from store shelves and from domestic case patients. Testing is ongoing, but to date the FDA has not identified a causative agent.

“Local investigation to confirm the presence of this product in Bermuda is ongoing.”

  1. YADON says:

And this remains legal whilst cannabis, which has never hurt anyone remains illegal.

    • O'Brien says:

Look up the effects of cannabis in triggering schizophrenia in adolescents, it may surprise you.

I’m not saying it should be illegal, but let’s not pretend it’s totally harmless either.

      • Micro says:

        Amen.

      • Sara says:

Nobody thinks children should smoke cannabis unless it is for absolute medical use, like stopping seizures. Legalization will regulate and make it harder for children to get.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Hasn’t hurt anyone, as long as you ignore the effects on the lungs, heart, reproductive system, and liver. And psychological effects.

      • YADON says:

The US Federal Government patented cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants in US Patent #6630507; it mentions Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, neurological trauma, HIV dementia, and autoimmune disorders as conditions for which cannabinoids may be indicated, and though more research is needed to determine the proper doses, routes of administration, and profiles of active compounds (e.g. terpenes [like pinene, limonene, and myrcene], flavonoids [like apigenin], and cannabinoids [like CBD, THCV, CBN, and THC]), CANNABlS may be indicated as a way to treat, prevent, and/or cure numerous other conditions, including cancers, organ damage and nausea induced by chemotherapy and radiation, chemotherapy resistance, diabetes and its complications, osteoporosis, exostosis, atherosclerosis, sepsis, reperfusion injury, obesity, microbial infections (including MRSA, brain-eating amoebae, and herpes), anxiety disorders (e.g. GAD, PTSD, and OCD), stroke damage, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, epilepsy, autism, depression, insomnia, spasticity, dystonia, dyskinesia, acne, psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, pruritis, asthma, fibromyalgia, lupus, migraine, vascular dementia, chronic kidney disease, liver diseases, chronic pancreatitis, Crohn’s disease, colitis, IBS, Huntington’s disease, prion diseases, arthritis, MS, ALS, pain, GVHD, organ transplant rejection, sleep apnea, incontinence, and metabolic syndrome. Smoking CANNABlS was found by UCLA researchers to not be linked with either lung cancer or COPD, but bronchitis was mentioned; if CANNABlS were re-legalized, non-smoking methods for using it could be promoted (e.g. vapor and oral). Strains of CANNABlS with low (or no) psychoactivity exist (e.g. CBD-rich) but Drug Prohibition hinders access to them. CANNABlS has astounding medical potential beyond its psychoactivity. Even the worst effects of CANNABlS are not as dangerous as the laws that ban it. Harm reduction is the only honest and effective way to deal with drugs, as Drug Prohibition has amplified or created any problems associated with drugs so special interests could exploit the issue for money and power

        • Hmmm says:

So what do you plan to do with it in it’s medicinal form? Do you have Parkinsons?

          • sage says:

People with your mindset would have no qualms about jailing genuinely sick (including terminally) people for seeking relief with a harmless (free) natural substance which works for them. There’s a special place in hell reserved for you.

        • Sandy Bottom says:

It mentions these does it. That doesn’t mean it cures any one of these things. It mentions them, that’s all. It means absolutely nothing.

Sage, suggesting that this cures stuff like cancer, autism, etc is ridiculous. There’s a special place in hell for people who pretend they have cures for these things. A few decades ago you’d have been called a snake oil salesman.

          • sage says:

No, it means it may be indicated as away to treat, prevent or cure numerous other conditions. Can you read? Where have I claimed herb cures cancer or anything else for that matter? What I will say is that it has many medical uses, with more to be revealed in time. So you do what ever you want when your health fails and so will we. Good night.

            • Sandy Bottom says:

Let’s be honest. It cannot treat the hundred or so conditions listed in yadon’s post above.
Just admit it. Forget the “more will be revealed in time” BS. It’s just stupid.

The only reason you lot want cannabis legalised is for recreational use. Just admit it.

              • sage says:

You can begin to be honest, starting with yourself, I know you certainly ain’t no doctor and you have no proof herb can’t treat these conditions, to counter the studies that offer proof that it does treat them. She say, they say, brainless dingbat vs science. One thing I must admit is your ignorance coupled with your desire to be contrary knows no bounds and even if I only wanted herb legalized for recreational use then I am in agreement with the people of Washington state, Colorado, Uruguay, Portugal and others, step aside silly person, your outlook will soon have a place in the corner of some museum.

                • Sandy Bottom says:

What “studies”? What “science”? Give us the link.

You really think cannabis treats everything listed in Yadon’s post?

You just want it for recreational use. Admit it.

                  • sage says:

                    Seek and ye shall find…..

                  • Sara says:

GOOGLE is your friend!!! I really can tell how lazy someone is by their lack of GOOGLE skills!

              • Sara says:

                ASS U ME.

        • Jo Co says:

@YADON, perhaps a read up of current sources are in order. As Callaghan et al (2013) shows, they conducted a 40 year review of marijuana use and did find there was an increased risk of lung cancer in chronic and or heavy users of cannabis.

While I agree more research is needed and there is definitely a place for it in medicine, minimizing the potential risks associated with it is not in anyone’s interest. Even the ‘less psychoactive forms’ are still psychoactive.

        • WTH says:

It gets rid of side affects because it relaxes the body.

    • Time Shall Tell says:

Never hurt anyone??? Remind me again, what did Bob Marley die from?

      • Time Shall Tell says:

Correction, I meant to word that statement differently.

Never hurt anyone? It touted as being a cure all one of which is for cancer, remind me again what did Bob Marley die from?

        • sage says:

Bob Marley certainly didn’t die from smoking herb, and although he died of cancer it isn’t on record if he used the herb to treat the cancer or even help with pain management or side effects as far as I know. Furthermore, I don’t know of anyone claiming smoking herb cures cancer but smoking it can provide pain management, appetite stimulation, reduce muscle spasm and has many more valid applications and THC is proven to trigger the destruction of cancer cells in humans in a process called autophagy (from the Greek for”self eating”) which is a cellular process in which cytoplasmic materials are sequestered into double-membrane vesicles and delivered to lysosomes for degradation or recycling. Although this is not yet a “cure” it shows huge potential, do you have a better cure like chemo which destroys all cells good and bad.

          • Sandy Bottom says:

He smoked cannabis, he got lung cancer, it killed him. That was what happened.

Your “logic” is much like tobacco companies, who argued for years there is “no proven causal link between tobacco and lung cancer”.

            • sage says:

Wrong as usual, Bob had acral lentigious melanoma aggravated by a toe injury, which spread to the rest of his body partly because he refused amputation and the aggressive nature of metastatic skin cancer. Comparing genocidal cancer sticks and their makers government endorsed lies to people who point out how hypocritical and discriminatory the heavily biased drug laws are makes me wonder if you have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo or could you really be that clueless, some mothers have ‘em.

            • Toodle-oo says:

Although I can understand how that misconception came about , Bob Marley did die of cancer but it was melonoma that started in his foot .

I also have little doubt that he used herb to alleviate some of the suffering but it sure didn’t save him .

            • Come Correct says:

“In July 1977, Marley was found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of a toe.”

Why do you continue to argue against this subject when you show you clearly know nothing about it and feel no way about calling others idiots and morons?

              • Sandy Bottom says:

I stand corrected on the issue of the cause of Bob Marley’s death. As does the other writer who made the same mistake, I imagine.

                • Sara says:

Lazy lazy lazy. Are you eating too much sugar? It makes you fat, lazy, and foggy.

            • Sara says:

Um okay Bob Marley didn’t die of lung cancer idiot!

  2. umm says:

Tylenol can cause liver damage as well, so does alcohol. EVERY YEAR. The problem is people are lazy and don’t research things before they take them. Just popping pills trying to lose weight without putting in work, drinking enough water etc. Its not rocket science.

  3. Nuffin but da Truth says:

LMAO…many think it makes your pecker stand to attention!
