Reminder: Bermuda Currency Deadline Is Today

December 31, 2013

Locals will no longer be able to use legacy, horizontal Bermuda banknotes to purchase goods and services after today [Dec 31].

First introduced into circulation in 1970, the horizontal “legacy” banknotes in denominations of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 are being removed from circulation. and will be replaced with the vertical banknote series introduced in 2009.

The Bermuda Monetary Authority said that as of 1st January 2014 the legacy banknotes will no longer be legal tender [they cannot be used to purchase goods and services], however the public has ten years to exchange legacy banknotes at their bank or at the Credit Union. More information is available on the Authority’s website.

  2. Time Shall Tell says:

I swear they do this just to keep tabs on the cash I have stuffed in my mattress….

  3. Another waste of money says:

If they’d simply decided to dispose of the old bills when they wore out (as opposed to pulling them all) the savings would have been substantial (several million?).

Instead, they foisted currency on us that no-one I have talked to likes (it’s pretty but otherwise useless) and spent a small fortune in the process.

  4. The Kid says:

What a waste of money – change for change sake – another PLP financial disaster – why go vertical when they could have gone Polymer (plastic ) and saved a bunch as polymer notes last much much longer..
