Premier Cannonier: ‘We Are On The Right Track’

January 20, 2014

cannonier craig bermuda“The recently reported 1% drop in the unemployment rate is good news for Bermuda. It indicates the economy is turning the corner toward growth in jobs and incomes,” said Premier Craig Cannonier.

“I am encouraged by the 2013 Labour Force Survey’s findings provided by the Department of Statistics, but remain deeply concerned by the fact that so many Bermudians remain unemployed. We have much work to do.

“This Government was elected to stop the Island’s economic slide and get Bermudians back to work. We spent our first year in office rebuilding the economic foundation and working to restore confidence in Bermuda as a place to do business. That work will continue through 2014.

“Turning around an economy that was in freefall is not simply a matter of pulling a lever here and pressing a button there. It involves a huge, coordinated effort within the government and beyond. We have worked with unions, industry and outside agencies to swing the economic pendulum back in our favour and will continue to do so.

“It’s still early days, but we are seeing growth in new company incorporations, growth in consumption that indicates businesses are starting to do better, growth in government revenues and, most importantly, growth in jobs and incomes, as reported in the Labour Survey.

“But we take nothing for granted. Recovery for a small undiversified economy like Bermuda’s is always going to be vulnerable to set-backs. We have to be sensible, patient and smart going forward, ready to adjust and work together for results that work for all of us.

“I want to assure the people of Bermuda that we will continue to do our best to get the economy working again. I am confident we are on the right track and I look forward to 2014 being a year in which many, many more Bermudians find their place in an economy that is finally working for them.

“That is my Number One priority as Premier.”

Oh darn it’s Mickey Mouse again. Crawl back into your hole and don’t come out until the oba needs you to help them win the next election with the poster boy face. People are still waiting for the 2000 jobs you promised and for crime to go down.

    • sonso says:

Premier Cannonier is the first premier in a few premierships to have not held a ministry position in addition, so naturally we are not hearing as much from him. Unlike (your) Brown and Cox, they were in the papers every other day talking about how well we are doing as a country, blah blah blah, and look where the hell that got us! Id rather not hear from Cannonier as often, than the drivel we heard from the past two Premiers! And that is a fact!

How about you go crawl back in that hole which you crawled out of, brother!

      • John says:

I would be totally shocked if he actually said something that made SENSE!!!! THAT would be newsworthy!!!!!

        • Mike Hind says:

Wow. You guys are sinking to new lows of desperation.

What part of this did you not understand? Maybe you can get someone to explain it to you…

        • Pants on Fire says:

          There is a point here.

Cannonier is cheering figure that not even he believes.

Did you read this survey. Here are a few nuggets.

There are 1079 MORE people employed in hotels in 2013 than in 2012… Do you really think there are that many more people in hotels.

There are 856 MORE people employed in Bars & Nightclubs than in 2013 than in 2012… Do you really think there are that many more people in bars.

Median Income for people in public administration (Govt Workers) was up 10% from 2012 to 2013, this while all workers took a 5% paycut!

Navin Johnson said it correct on another thread, this isn’t worth the paper it is printed on, and the premier should be ashamed for touting these numbers!!

Finally, it should be noted that the drop in the unemployment rate doesn’t have much to do with “new jobs” it has to do with the fact that 621 people left the Labour Force, which means they either left the country, or stopped looking for work. This is NOT good news, it is the opposite. BAD NEWS..

Shame on the premier for spinning this report which surely is NOT positive.

      • Sandgrownan says:

Or off getting awards every five minutes..

    • Srsly? says:

Would you lie to someone, if you knew it was the only way to save them?

      • What a joke says:

Yea I would lie, I see yea point

      • Jus' Askin' says:

        PLP’s motto ;-)

      • Rhonda Neil says:

OBA the liars… wolf in sheep clothing …..the question is who are they they lying too… Bermudians or their financial backers…or both…

    • Mike Hind says:

You lot are hilarious… and sad.

When he’s quiet, you say “Where is Cannonier?”
When he says something, you say “Crawl back into your hole.”

I love how you keep pushing the idea that the OBA said they’d do 2000 instantly and completely ignore, for example, the 420 new hires a few months ago.
I know you’re mad your party didn’t win the election, but at least try a BIT of honesty when you’re trying to denounce.

      • Ex OBA voter says:

Mike last I checked the oba didn’t win by much. What do you think is going to happen to the OBA if they don’t keep their promise by next election? Also the only people who are questioning “where is Cannonier?” is the OBA voters.

On the other side of the coin people don’t care what he has to say. If you don’t believe that ok fine, but mark my words Mike when his turn is up, he will be remembered as the Dumbest Premier this Country has ever seen.

        • Mike Hind says:

The next election is many years away and, if they continue on this track, they will have fulfilled their promise of 2000 jobs. Your claim of ‘the only people saying “where is Cannonier?” Are OBA” is patently false and can be dismissed completely. You’re making that up.

As for his legacy? Ridiculous. He’s doing fine. You guys are just desperate for them to fail and that’s really nasty.

          • Jus' Askin' says:

Mike government is bloated as it is. Where are these 2000 jobs going to be? OBA can not create 2000 government jobs.

            • Mike Hind says:

              *sigh*

I can’t even think about answering this. It’s just so…

              ugh.

              • Jus' Askin' says:

Truth is Mike you can not answer it, nor OBA ;-)
OBA said 2000 jobs but never said where these jobs were coming from.

      • Gangdumbstyle says:

So true, Mike. If I were a PLP supporter I would be very very quiet right now. The way that the PLP ran this country was nothing less than disgusting. 800 million in “unaccounted for government spending”? They left us with a self inflicted and disastrous economy, massive unemployment, mega debt, failing education system, increased crime, failing tourism product etc… Name ONE area in 14 years the PLP improved upon. All they did was rename holidays, airports and building to praise their own members. They created “National Heroes Day” and then couldn’t get their act together enough to come up with a second “National Hero” in year two. What a joke they were.

      • Portia says:

Mike, the OBA did not create 420 new hires. Nearly half of the positions who claimed the tax exemption last year were in the retail/ hospitality industry, if I remember correctly, which were simply being continued from the tax breaks instituted by the PLP. Plus, I believe many of those jobs were seasonal/ temporary.

        • Nick says:

Portia, the 420 would not have been continued tax breaks as one needed to have been unemployed for the three months before being hired. Seasonal and/or temporary jobs as well as full-time jobs would have made up that number as long as the employee was unemployed for at least 3 months up to the time of hiring.

        • Mike Hind says:

          Evidence, please.

        • Sandy Bottom says:

No. They were new positions. That was the whole point.

      • JustAskin2 says:

How many of them are Bermudians?

      • Pants on Fire says:

420 new hires? You aren’t calling that new jobs are you?

        • Mike Hind says:

          Sigh. Here we go again.

        • Sandy Bottom says:

That is exactly what they were.

I know you hate to see it, but 420 new jobs were created.

          • Time Shall Tell says:

How could it be 420 new jobs when the stats just released showed there where only 115 less unemployed people from 2012? So it seems it was nothing more then a reshuffle rather then actually tackling of the unemployment problem.

    • Enough says:

So sick of hearing people go on about where are the 2,000 jobs! We had this a couple months after the election; can people actually be that moronic to think that 2,000 jobs will just suddenly fall from the sky?? Plans are being put in place in order to create the jobs which will come over a period of time.

Cleaning up the mess that was left behind was never happening overnight and comments like yours just go to show your level of ignorance on the matter.

  2. Kangoocar says:

Thank you Prem Cannonier!! I do understand how hard you are working for all of us, but my personal advise too you would be too be more visible and get your message out there more often!! The plp nonsense machine is continuously inundating the weak minded with press release after press release, this needs to stop, for the betterment of all of us!!!
Now if only this miss informed would read your last 5 paragraphs over and over until they get it!!!

  3. Paul says:

Premier Cannonier, I would love for you to go the best talk show host in Bermuda….the Shirley Dill show.. We would love to hear more from you.
PLEASE do not bother with any of the other so called talk show hosts.

    • Mazumbo says:

He’s been running from Sherrie J since day one. LMAO

      • Mike Hind says:

        You’re ridiculous.

        • Mazumbo says:

What’s ridiculous is a leader punking out from a professional open dialog with Bermuda’s #1 talk show host regardless how you think about her she does her homework and she knows her s–t.
So I guess saving himself from embarrassment it’s safer for him to go on a watered down, mediocre talk show, I don’t feel like hearing another ,I’m not answering that, this meeting is over. I’m tired off EMASCULATED LEADERS !!!!!!!!!

          • @Mazumbo why dont Sherri J Ask Dr.Brown, Con, Burch, Burgess and co come her show and tell the people about the Global Hue, Louis Brown Evan Court, human smugggling, fiasco’s? Oh No we the Sherri J show dont ask the PLP the Tough questions just the OBA! Why is that? Cuz its gonna hurt her own personal agenda as well as the useless PLP!

          • Mike Hind says:

Says the guy who rabidly supports a party whose leader was avidly anti-media. You’re ridiculous and a hypocrite. You wanna talk “punking out”? Let’s talk about “plantation questions”.

            • Hmmmmm says:

If you don’t believe in “plantation questions” then ask yourself why no media have questioned the return of the minsiterial GP car fleet to our roads or why no-one even blinks at the travel the ministers are taking, complete with the latest junket to Singapore by Crock and Pettingill. Just because you say they’re not real doesn’t make it so and until the media subject the OBA to the same scrutiny as they did the PLP, there is nothing you can say that will disabuse objective people of the difference in treatment which is blatantly obvious.

              • Triangle Drifter says:

Care to give verification to the GP fleet being back on the road or travel as before for Ministers?

The last heard on the GP fleet was that they were being used to replace old GP cars being used by Government rather than buy new cars.

A travel expense comparison between the PLP & OBA should be most interesting. If the OBA is anywhere near the PLP waste the OBA supporters will be first in line to howl about it.

                • Hmmmmm says:

you’ll never know unless you ask. Plantation questions yet again.

              • Mike Hind says:

This has nothing to do with what we’re talking about. You’re moving the goalposts.

              • Finger Pointing Fail says:

Those two (Crockwell and Pettingill) went to view and discuss with the Singaporean authorities the ins and outs of their casino model as a means to adapt this model for Bermuda’s benefit.

Dr. Brown went and stayed in a 7 star hotel in Dubai for what?

Dr. Brown traveled to India for what? No Bollywood movies have come to our shores or an influx of Indian tourists as promised. But hey all of a sudden the Indian person that he met and was pictured with opened up a generic drug importation business with another now PLP MP. So I guess at least someone benefited from our tax payer funded trips.

Dr. Brown traveled to China for what? Still don’t see an influx of Chinmese tourists or Chinese investment on our shores.

Also, if you read the paper (not the daily) a few months ago you would’ve noted the front page article which states that the GP car fleet has now been reduced by a third.

                Try again.

                • Hmmmmm says:

You lot’s fixation with Doc is almost sexual. Let it go. Everything he did and everywhere he went is being mimicked either by the OBA or its supporters in business. Do the research. Starting with a little car company investment revealed today…..

                  • Finger Pointing Fail says:

                    Fixation with Dr. Brown?

You were the one that injected him into this thread. No one else, but you. Just like each and every post of yours. Take your tongue out.

And no they aren’t mimicking him. Did they spend tax payer monies for their offspring to hold a poker event at the Playboy mansion? Or spend tax payers monies to fly half way around the world so that they can set up a business to benefit themselves?

Now please highlight where the current Government is mimicking him in any of those examples provided above.

                    • Finger Pointing Fail says:

My apologies as you didn’t inject Dr. Brown into this particular thread.

But you are his great defender…

                  • Mike Hind says:

No. It’s not. It’s a valid point to bring up when the Smear Squad® pipes up with their hypocrisy. You guys were absolutely silent, or, worse, actively defended Dr. Brown, but now it’s high treason to leave the island for any reason.

You’re only saying this to dismiss valid points that you don’t like.

And your claim that “Everything he did and everywhere he went is being mimicked either by the OBA or its supporters in business.” is patently false. PLEASE try honesty.
                    Just once.

          • Rockfish#2 says:

Does the term “plantation question” ring any bells.

      • Gangdumbstyle says:

Some people work at solving problems and do something about them, and some talk all day about solving problems and do nothing. Some within the PLP (like Col. Burch) constantly worked the airwaves that his party “owned”. But realistically, what good did he do. He created more drama and messes within his ministries.

      • SMH says:

Any one in their right mind should run from Sherri’s show. It is awful and biased. Totally the last talk show to aquaint one’s self with.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

Not worth the electricity to make the sound.

          • Mazumbo says:

Unfortunately when people resist and oppose Colonialist ideology and mindsets you would get a response like that History proves it.

  4. Tellitlikeitis says:

Hahahahahahahaha,Mr Premier you are funny guy.hahahahahahaha.

We are on the right track,Hahahahahaha,My stomach is hurting me from laughing.

    • Kangoocar says:

Yup!! Right on que!! The plp talking heads criticize the very person that is trying to help them?? You plper’s are pathetic!! Your party put you into the hardship you find yourselves in, and you have no problem with it?? There really is no helping you!!! May you all suffer because of your stupidity!!!

      • Islanders says:

I would think they are employed and own their homes other than that, they should talk to Bootsie about their starts as comedians

      • Pants on Fire says:

Kangocar, you may need to have your anger problem checked.

Do you beleive this survey? The one that says there are 1100 more people employed in hotels than last year? What about the 850 additional people employed in bars/clubs than last year. Do you think that is correct?

If you don’t agree (which I am sure even you don’t think that can be right) why do you then think the premier should talk about this survey like it is good news, and say “right direction”.

    • Srsly? says:

What is the right track in your opinion. The one PLP had us on? Welcome to reality.

  5. What a joke says:

This guy reminds me of a jack in the box. The people in charge need to return him to Santa.

    • Mike Hind says:

      What does this even mean?

Seriously… are you guys THIS desperate? This is just gibberish.

      • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

I’m curious, Mr HIND, you appear to post to ridicule and/or attempts to correct the critics of the OBA. Why not post a critique of the article itself?

Do you deliberately seek to antagonise, ridicule and/or outright in your face incivility as a deflection from any criticise of the OBA, or just to wind your time away?

And, I am asking a serious question, as you spend a lot of time in a negative vein attacking anyone who criticises that political party and those within it – it’s reader parasitic; you spring to life to attack anyone who has a strong opinion of the story rather than developing your opinion of the story.

        London, England

        • Mike Hind says:

          Here we go again.

I speak out against falsehood, ask people to back up their claims and am “uncivil” to those folks that babble nonsense. Posting ridiculous things is an invitation to ridicule.
And posting nasty things like “they stopped whipping slaves, we should stop whipping the PLP” is just disgusting.
What would you like me to say about the story? Mr. Cannonier said what he had to say pretty clearly.
Why are you attacking me for not posting about the story, but remain silent about those saying nothing but “hahaha, he’s funny”? Hm?
Show me where I’ve attacked someone for having a strong opinion about the story. I haven’t. You’re making that up. What I did do was speak to the usual bizarre nonsense people post because they’re mad that their party lost the election.
As for how I spend my time? It’s none of your business and you are out of line for asking. You haven’t asked anyone else why they post. Why me?
What is your motive for posting this false attack?

          • Question says:

I don’t believe that Mrs. Akinstall was attacking you Mike. I believe that she was simply questioning your motives when posting – - based on her own opinion of your posts.

I know that we normally disagree, which I do not have an issue with, on these blogs, but I agree that how you spend your time is your business and should not be questioned.

I haven’t commented on this article as I do not see the point. Either you agree with the Premier or you don’t – - no real thing to discuss or debate – nothing there.

Your motives are yours and yours alone – - totally agree with that point.

My comment was simply providing an opinion on Mrs. Akinstall’s purpose of posting – - I don’t believe she is attacking you – that’s all.

            Q

            • Mike Hind says:

You wouldn’t. Not even a little bit surprising, given your history.

          • Indepedent says:

            @ Mike Hind,

I will tell you why she is talking to you, because your a Dumba$$. You are the OBA attack dog on here, and people have finally smelled your a$$. Understand now?

          • Dennis Williams says:

what about the falsehoods you write….you make me laugh…..you have said things about people you have no clue about….

            • Mike Hind says:

When? Show me when. This hasn’t happened, not even once.

              You are lying.

          • Hey Mike says:

Maybe because you always have some oba finger stuck in your back END!

            • Mike Hind says:

Riiight. We should listen to some coward hiding behind a fake name.

              You’re a pathetic idiot.

Shush now. Let the grownups talk.

          • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

And what is my falsehood against you, Mr HIND? I criticised you for your consistent ridicule of other bloggers rather than posting an opinion on the story, and you proudly admit that you DO ridicule other bloggers. Yet you ask what is my motive for falsely attacking you? An amateur and disingenuous attempt to spin, Mr HIND.

Please read to understand, Mr HIND. I mentioned nothing about your personal time; I clear stated,”…or just to wind your time away.” Where does that phrase question your personal time? it addresses your time spent posting. And, it may be all the same to you, but I am totally uninterested in your personal time and how you spend it, Mr HIND.

Now why would you take my comment from another post, not addressing you and deliberately spin the comment out of context? The out of context comment is, “”they stopped whipping slaves, we should stop whipping the PLP” [is just disgusting.]” You have spun it out of context to label it “disgusting”. Really, Mr HIND? And when did you become the official arbiter of political correctness, the arbiter of diplomacy, or an arbiter of history, perhaps?

Since I do not use these blogs to do research work for other bloggers, let me point you in the direction of historical disgust, Mr HIND. Read, Twelve Years A Slave by Solomon Northurp. I believe that you have taken my comment out of context in the interest of a cheap, amateurish spin to score political points, Mr HIND.

Ask what does the analogy means? Answer – heavily oppressive to the tipping point of violating one’s human rights. And I have explained it in detail in my response to Joonya above (or in what order these posts are placed), Mr HIND.

Finally, do not attempt spin yourself out of the fact that you delight in ridiculing other bloggers, but rather focus on the rules of debating…debate on the subject NOT attack the debater.

So, what should I say about the article, 101 pep talk to the party faithful.

            London, England

            • Mike Hind says:

Now, you’re just lashing out and yelling for no reason, Vallrie Akinstall. Have a great day. There’s nothing I could say that’ll calm you.

              • Jus' Askin' says:

Mike where are 2000 jobs going to come from?

              • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

And you can hear me yelling all the way from London?

Read, Twelve Year A Slave by Solomon Northurp, Mr HIND.

Hopefully it will abate your relentless attempts of propaganda on these blogs.

                London, England

                • Mike Hind says:

That’s an outright, lie, Ms. Akinstall.
I’m not the propagandist. Nice attempt. Try honesty.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

WOW, did somebody pee in your porridge this morning?

Nope, was not thinking of you in particular though your tone towards the OBA & PLP has changed noticably. If you have been following me you will have noticed that I have also given the OBA a crack of the whip when thought to be justified. So no, I do not gulp down the red koolaid without looking first.

The PLP whipping happens usually as a response to a writer who is forgetful or has very selective memory of how & why we are where we are. If some feet get pinched, too bad. Nonsense from them will not go unchallenged thoughthere are a few who don’t even deserve my time to read their posts.

That is my choice, the same as one has the option of not reading my posts. The readers choice. No worry to me either way.

          • Indepedent says:

Captain Triangle Drifter to the rescue, dun dunnnnnna lmao.

Yes,he is truly a funny guy alright. Right track???? Hahahahaha
If, we were, on the right track, it wouldn’t be due to anything the Premier has done. But let me back up, so that no one in the OBA actually think we the people believe this nonsense- and if we ARE on the track, look out because the train is coming, and it ain’t the Soul Train.

The same stats people that stated the population was increasing, based on a 10yr prediction that was made 6yrs ago…and census provide projection was “off”….ok, I believe them.

  11. Triangle Drifter says:

It is going to take awhile to stop the train wreck that we were headed for. Yeah, I know, Paula said that the recession was over & we were headed out to better times a few years ago. Look where that got us.

No, Cannonier is not a Minister like the previous 2 PLP Premiers. Fortunately for him he has a much larger & much deeper talent pool to draw from for Ministers & they are quite capable of standing up & speeking coherently for themselves without reading some statement prepared for them by a civil servant & then running from the press.

Nice to see all of the Bettys out in force. The tone is the same from all of them. Must have had a little meeting round at Alaska Hall to get direction in what to write. Ah well, nice to see them.

    • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

Unless you consider me to be a Betty, then my post to you will be pointless…

It’s time to give the PLP whipping a rest. When that train (PLP) was at full speed there were NO critics, now you guys cannot stop! They stop whipping slaves, now let’s stop whipping the PLP, your on a new train.

If you believe in the OBA, and you do, then speak to their strengths, talents and abilities, with some I anticipate that even remote constructive criticism is a stretch too far, but with you, I have read intelligent, well thought out posts and sincerity.

Do not get dragged in the undertow, your party needs level heads outside the party as well as in it.

      • Sandy Bottom says:

Valirie, what the hell are you talking about?

Criticising the PLP is “whipoing” them?

Are you really using that analogy?

        • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

Yes, but are you questioning my right of freedom of expression?

That’s odd, coming from a person who hides his/her identity.

          London, England

          • Sandy Bottom says:

Just strikes me as bringing race into it for no reason. It is possible to disagree with the plp without being racist.

You’re the one, actually, who is attempting to discourage freedom of expression.

      • Joonya says:

The reason for the continued “whipping” as you call it Valirie, is because the same sheep that are criticizing the OBA with such diligence are the same sheep that kept their *rses quiet when their beloved PLP were doing 10 times worse, and with their constant attacks, are in effect preventing the OBA from trying to fix the very problem they were quite happy with letting unfold back in the green days! Thats what bothers most Non-PLPers.

        • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

Yes, but when the PLP was in power, I was a very strong critic of their polices. But to their credit, NOT one PLP supporter, ever threatened me, told me NOT to return to Bermuda, made it clear to watch my back, censored my commentary, screamed hysterically at me when I probed why my comments were being censored, deleted all my comments from ALL blogs and/or failed to state why they, as media which represents freedom of speech, have done any and/or all of the above.

So, to recap, I have NEVER been threatened and/or placed in fear by PLP supporters, in response to my posts highly critical of their leadership. Yet, in contrast, I have been threatened by OBA supporters in response to my posts about the premier, and on more than one occasion. Needless to say, I prefer the politics of civility, NOT threats of revenge, outright censorship and the heavily oppressive attempts to stifle and deflect freedom of expression by internet trolls who are obsessively loyal to the OBA hierarchy.

Sounds conspiratorial Joonya? It’s the clear difference between the PLP and OBA supporters and the current political environment.

  12. Charles says:

Using Premier Cannonier’s analogy: Has the train left the station ? Are we truly all aboard ? Where is this train heading ? Does everyone still have their ticket ? Are we carrying hazardous material ? Watch out for ‘Snidely Whiplash’ who may have tied ‘Ms Bermuda’ to the track just ahead! Gotta watch out for bandits. Hope we don’t get derailed Mr. Engineer ? And who is the conductor of this train?

    ….too many westerns!

    • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

Very witty…I am amused as it cuts both ways…

  13. aceboy says:

It’s funny. When Paula was criticised the PLPites screamed blue murder about the need to “respect” the position of the Premier. Even after she described HERSELF as a Cog in the wheel. But call Cannonier Mickey Mouse and that is fine.

As Mr. Hind says alot…it is ok when we do it.

  14. JUNK YARD DOG says:

Unfortunately from some recent the comments we have been reading recently we are exposed to negativity and disagreeable attitudes with a liberal topping of racism and hate, which is unhealthy for this or any country.

BASHING OTHER PEOPLE is uncalled for ; undeserving; uninvited; ill conceived; derogatory ; unproductive ; undesirable; undermining; irresponsible; immature; boring; unwelcome; pointless; and negative; and with out doubt a complete waste of time and energy and serves no economic or social gain.

  15. LOL (original TM*) says:

Every story every time the PLP and it’s supporters on here show they are nothing but a bunch of haters. Worst of all it is those with that type of hate and party agendas that are ripping the country apart.
