Bermuda Lose To Curacao In Santo Domingo

February 28, 2014

Bermuda was on the losing end of the battle with Curacao, going down 2 – 1 on Day Four of the 2014 JDC and JFC Tennis Tournament in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The one consolation was that Nick Lines won his second singles match of the event.

In the opening singles match Tanner Boyle took on Aydan Gomez Osorio. He started strong with some good serving that yielded return errors from Gomez. Gomez has a very useful serve of his own and managed to even things up holding his own serve as easily.

Bermuda coach Jerome Bradshaw said, “Things turned around quickly with Boyle having trouble when his serves did not reap dividends. Boyle’s ground game is built around hard flat drives and he just could not find his range. When the ball did go in the power was absorbed by the Dutch speaking national.

“This totally frustrated Boyle who just never got it together again in the match. He did try the retrieve and push game and managed to prolong the points. He just did not get the winning points and it seemed to be a slow torture to the end. While his opponent remained calm and played smart and steady, Tanner went into self-destruct mode.” In the end it was a comfortable 6 – 2, 6 – 2 win for Curacao.

Nick Lines had a surprisingly easier match against Branden De Palm. De Palm had a similar game to Gomez Osorio but it played right into the hands of Lines. In short order Lines took a 5 games to love lead before De Palm could garner his first game. The first set ended 6 – 1 for Bermuda. Lines said, “I felt a little tired from the tie against Jamaica, but I now needed just one set to claim victory.”

Lines kept the pressure on and was able to execute most shots he wanted. There was some fine shots from both De Palm and Lines but the one that really counted was the one to win the games. Lines leveled the tie at one match each, claiming his second singles win 6 – 1, 6 – 2 in just under an hour.

The winner of this tie would play Barbados to decide the 9th and 10th positions.

The doubles team of Lines and Boyle took on Aydan Gomez Osorio and Dimitri Celestine of Curacao. The young Dutchmen were very comfortable with the game of doubles and time and time again successfully controlled the net. Unfortunately Bermuda was outmatched in this encounter. Lines and Boyle did the best they could but in the end it was a 6 – 2, 6 – 2 victory for Curacao.
