BGA Welcomes Olympic Medalist To Bermuda

Peter-KormannThe Bermuda Gymnastics Association [BGA] has announced that they will welcome 1976 Olympic bronze medalist and 2000 Olympic Team coach Peter Kormann to Bermuda this week.

According to the BGA, “Peter Kormann is a retired American gymnast and gymnastics coach. In the 1976 Olympics, he became the first American to medal in competition against the Soviets when he won a bronze medal in the men’s floor competition.

“Mr. Kormann competed for Southern Connecticut State University under coach Abie Grossfeld. In 1977, Kormann won the Nissen Award [the "Heisman" of men's gymnastics]. He was selected in 2000 to be the United States’ Olympic coach for the men’s gymnastics team.

“This is Mr. Kormann’s first visit to Bermuda, and he will be spending time with our up-and-coming gymnasts at the National Training Center in St. Davids. He will also be meeting with our competitive team parents to discuss his experiences as a gymnast, coach, and gym owner, as well as answer any questions.

“His connection to Bermuda comes from his brother-in-law, Duke Nelligan, the head coach of Bermuda’s national team. ”

In addition to this evening, Mr. Kormann will also be in the gym on Thursday, February 20 from 4.30pm until 6.30pm to work with the BGA’s boys competitive team.

This is an exciting opportunity for the BGA program and they report that they are “very happy” to have Mr. Kormann with them this week.
