Chewstick To Screen “Louder Than A Bomb”

February 12, 2014

The Chewstick Foundation will host a public screening of the documentary film “Louder Than a Bomb” documentary at their community facility on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street on Thursday, February 13 at 6.00pm.

The documentary will introduce the concept for The Chewstick Foundation’s Break The Chains Youth Poetry Program, a new creative writing and performance program using spoken word and poetry as a storytelling tool for students aged 14 through 19.

Over the last three years, the Chewstick Foundation has piloted its Youth Poetry Program to serve the mission of empowering young people to tell their own story confidently and authentically. Within the Break The Chains program, school poetry clubs interact via writing and performance workshops, with the culmination being an interschool poetry competition planned for May of this year.

The “Louder Than a Bomb” documentary will open the dialogue as The Chewstick Foundation aims to have the community informed and connected throughout the process of not only developing the first ever National Youth Poetry Team to perform both locally and internationally, but also to build poetry and spoken word appreciation and capacity in young people and the community, develop youth voice in public dialogue on social issues, create positive experiences, increase self confidence, promote literacy, and more.

“Louder Than a Bomb” is produced by Young Chicago Authors, a Chicago-based charity that has been an inspiration and partner in formulating the Break The Chains model.

Following the documentary, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the Break The Chains Program, ask questions, and discuss ways to enhance the program over the next few months.

The Chewstick Foundation hopes to see an array of community members on Thursday, February 13 at 6.00pm, as they plan for the Break the Chains program to be a far-reaching endeavor that helps to heal our fractured society.
