Historical Videos: Bermuda Shown 73 Years Ago

February 16, 2014

Thanks to the ability of modern technology to scan and digitize 16mm film, more video clips taken during the first half of the twentieth century are becoming available to the general public, such as these two pieces of video depicting Bermuda in 1941.

The first video, lasting just under two minutes, shows off boats in the harbour, several seaplanes coming in for landings, and a series of examples of Bermudian architecture.

The second video, running nearly seven and a half minutes, has been digitized in colour, giving an even more visually accurate portrayal of the island as it existed more than 70 years ago.

This video shows people frolicking on the beach, seaplanes approaching for landing, and several long shots of empty beaches, with waves rolling in and clear skies above.

Soon after, the shot pans to people enjoying a walk in a park, before showing off a series of signature Bermuda sunsets from several different vantage points.

Great film clips but what a shame to see how much we have screwed up the Hamilton skyline. Today the Cathedral can hardly be seen.
