Minister Extends Support To Corrections Recruits

February 3, 2014

Earlier today the Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley visited the Westgate Correctional Facility where twelve men, ranging from ages 24 – 44, are undergoing a 12-week training course in anticipation of joining the ranks of the Department of Corrections.

The programme involves fitness training, defensive tactic training, practical testing and an interview process. And after hearing first hand from each of the men as to why they decided to join the service, Minister Dunkley thanked them for their commitment and offered them some words of encouragement.

“I want to thank you for stepping forward and answering the call to serve as a Corrections Officer. It’s important that you understand that this is not just a job, it’s a career,” Minister Dunkley said.

“You all bring something to the table and while you’re only two weeks into your training, you will learn that you have a tremendously difficult job to do and that you will encounter some challenges. But I know you will be the role models that people expect.

“Being a Corrections Officer carries with it a significant responsibility. It’s a difficult world where justice must be served, but if you are to be agents of change, you must remember to be fair. You have the awesome responsibility of preparing inmates so that they re-enter our society as better people.”

Minister Dunkley concluded, “Above all, remember that you are part of a team and that you are only as strong as your weakest link. The next several weeks will serve as an ideal time to bond with your fellow trainees. I’m delighted to see such a quality group of young men and I look forward to seeing you in another eight weeks at your graduation.”

      • Algonquin says:

Col. Eddie Lamb is not White – he’s mixed White/Black/Native American – I should know
because he is a close relative of mine – and he’s not afraid to tell you that either!
also does color make a difference – this is a job about a lot more things than race trust me.

      • Fed up says:

Did you both (nuffin but da truth and squirt) just wake up or something? Anyone can apply, black, white or purple. Does it matter what color they are when they get the job. As long as they’re doing their job, who cares! And squirt, those aren’t two white officers in the middle, that’s your minister Dunkley and commissioner Lamb!

    • Seriously?? says:

      Why does this even matter?

Haha. So prison officers have 12 weeks of training.

But our ‘national defense force’ has 2 weeks of training and half of it is learning how to march in a straight line.
