March 11, 2014

This past weekend saw few matches played in the Bermuda Hockey Federation, with both the women’s B and men’s leagues in action.

Women’s A League

Ravens A vs Longtails A [Mar 7] – Final Score: 1-0 to Ravens

A balanced game between Ravens and Longtails. A lot of attacking by Ravens, but Longtails’ defence would clear out of bounds various attempts at goal. Both teams fighting to get a goal, but with each team defending well. Extraordinary play by Longtails’ Maya Palacio as she dribbled the ball up the field who found Kirstie Jones near the circle who struck the ball just short of the ‘keepers’ right post but was unsuccessful in scoring and the first half ended scoreless.

The second half commenced very quickly by both teams, but due to a stick tackle in the circle, Ravens were awarded a penalty corner; injected by Georgia Harris to Ana Abend who cracked the ball at goal, but the Longtails’ ‘keeper’ Valerie Young made a great save. Another penalty corner was awarded to Ravens for high balls and sticks in the circle, and another attempt at goal was saved by ‘keeper’ Young. With several strikes at goal by Ravens, Longtails’ determination prevented execution. Ravens’ Joanne Bielby received the ball from the 50 metre line taking it down the right side and crossed it to the far post to find the unmarked Kristen Ingleman on the post who slipped the ball in passed ‘keeper’ Young for a field in the 64th minute and although the game had 6 minutes left the victors were Ravens of 1-0.

Budgies A vs Ravens A [Mar 8] – Final Score: 4-0 to Budgies

Budgies’ Keishae Robinson scored a field goal in the 14th minute. After that Budgies’ Yvonna Osbourne scored a field goal in the 17th minute. In the 56th minute Francesca Cacace scored a field goal for Budgies’. And at last Tse Minors scored last field goal in the 68th minute for Budgies’.

Women’s B League

Bluebirds vs Ravens [Mar 7] – Final Score: 3-2 to Ravens B

Another balanced game between these two teams using a mixture of youth and experience working well together. The fluidity of the game was ongoing as the ball transferred from left to right.

Ravens’ Kristen Ingleman scored from a penalty corner to the right post between a defenders’ legs in the 8th minute which resulted in a score of 1-0 to Ravens. Bluebirds’ Jo-Ann Smith collected a long pass from Jill Finnigan and after a solo run for a ball which appeared to be going out of bounds, she lounged into the air near the top of the ‘D’ and a crack at goal past the Ravens’ ‘keeper’ for a field goal in the 10th minute and now the score was tied 1-1. A pass from Smith to the left found Andrea Cann running towards the circle, and as she drew out the defender and Ravens’ ‘keeper’ for a slip into the left corner of the goal for a field goal in the 19th minute which advanced the score of 2-1 to Bluebirds and that’s how the first half finished.

The second half saw a lot more action. Ravens’ Megan Troake dribbled the ball into the circle and her hit found Mollie O’Donnell on the left post that slipped the ball in for a field goal in the 46th minute

and the score was tied once again of 2-2. Both teams continued the pressure, and a controversial decision and a quick break created an opportunity for Ravens’ Georgia Harris to break the tie and the game ended in the 69th minute of 3-2 to Ravens.

Men’s Hockey

Spartans’ Donovan Simmons executed a penalty corner in the 4th minute. Spartans’ Hemijah Bean scored field goals in the 8th and 60th minute. Women’s B League

Bluebirds vs Swallows [Mar 8] – Final Score: 3-2 to Bluebirds B

This game started with Swallows playing with 9 and Bluebirds pressed their defense as they would execute some really good passing. Bluebirds’ right forward Jill Finnigan would be seen dribbling the ball up the field towards the base line but her direct crosses were stopped by Swallows’ ‘keeper’ who was practically unbeatable. Bluebirds’ Jo-Ann Smith received a pass and her hard strike from the right deflected off a defenders’ stick and into the goal and Bluebirds went up 1-0 in the 33rd minute off a field goal. Two minutes later Smith scored another field goal with assistance from Finnigan, as her determination finally paid off and the first half finished 2-0 to Bluebirds.

Swallows’ Kelli Nusum executed a penalty corner from a ball injected by Liz Stewart by way of a flick from the top of the ‘D’ high to the Bluebirds’ ‘keepers’ right in the 45th minute and now the score was 2-1. Bluebirds’ Liz Twite ran from the 50 metre line to join the attack, and her retrieval of the ball near the back line and a pass to Paula Few near the circle that scored a field goal in the 60th minute.

Without Liz Twite’s lung busting run, the ball would have gone over the back line for a long corner and Bluebirds would have lost the possibility of scoring. Bluebirds’ youth player Lauren Patterson played with no rest and her great speedy injecting of the ball at the penalty corners. Two minutes later Swallows’ Rebecca Scott scored a field goal from a cross into the circle from the left side, who struck the ball across the goal into the bottom right hand corner but Bluebirds were the winners with a result of 3-2.

Ravens vs Longtails [Mar 8] – Final Score: 4-2 to Ravens B

Ravens’ used a few of their experienced players to assist their junior players which showed great sportsmanship. Longtails used 3 of their 9 year olds who played very well; they were stopping the ball near the Ravens defensive area and making several good passes.

Longtails’ Maya Palacio would be the first to score in this match from a field goal in the 19th minute from a pass by Tiana Correia who was top left of the ‘D’ and controlled the ball in and a successful reverse stick shot into the left corner of the goal and it was 1-0 to Longtails. Ravens’ Mollie O’Donnell was score a field goal in the 33rd minute and Kristen Ingleman a penalty corner at the half time whistle in the 35th minute and the Ravens’ had gone ahead 2-1.

Into the second half, Ravens’ Carolyn Soares would receive a pass at the top of the ‘D’ from Sydney Bodenstab and score a field goal in the 48th minutes and Kristen Ingelman a field goal in the 69th minute. Longtails’ Selina Whitter had an outstanding game, she made a pass to Palacio who dribbled the ball from the 25 metre line beating all in her path and by drawing the play to the right of the circle a onetime crack into the corner of that side of the goal in the 70th minute just at the final whistle but Ravens came away the winners of 4-2.
