BHF Men’s Hockey: Double Win For Spartans

March 13, 2014

The Bermuda Hockey Federation saw two games played over the weekend, each of them between the mens’ Upstarts and Spartans, and each of them ending with a convincing win by the Spartans.

Upstarts vs Spartans [Mar 7] – Final Score: 6-1 to Spartans

The Spartans’ Donovan Simmons executed a penalty corner in the 4th minute to open the scoring, with Hemijah Bean scoring field goals in the 8th and 60th minutes. Teammate Dylan Pacheco executed a hat-trick in the 17th, 40th and 52nd minute due to field goals to round out the Spartans’ scoring.

The Upstarts’ Donald Moniz blasted home a penalty corner in the 50th minute to put his team on the scoreboard.

Upstarts vs Spartans [Mar 8] – Final Score: 6-1 to Spartans

The Spartans scored first through a penalty corner by Donovan Simmons from the top of the circle, dribbling in and cracking it to the right of the Upstarts’ keeper in the 4th minute. Donovan Simmons quickly ran down the right side and slipped the ball to Hemijah Bean, who scored a field goal comfortably past the keeper in the 8th minute, making the score 2-0.

The Spartans’ Richard Minors moved the ball down the left and used his speed to take on the Upstarts’ defence, finding Simmons at the top of the circle for a shot on goal that was stopped by an Upstarts’ defender, but that loose ball was slipped in by Dylan Pacheco in the 17th minute from a field goal, and the first half ended 3-0 to Spartans.

The Spartans’ fourth goal came from a text book play by Hemijah Bean from the left with a slip to Donovan Simmons, who was at the centre of the circle, to Dylan Pacheco on the right. Pacheco controlled the ball and slammed it into the goal.

As a result of a foul in the Spartans’ defensive area, the Upstarts were awarded a penalty corner, received by Donnie Moniz at the top of the circle, who made no mistake by slamming it passed the Spartans’ keeper in the 50th minute, cutting the score to 4-1. Only two minutes later, though, it would be Pacheco from the Spartans’ who would complete his hat-trick of field goals by using his speed and beating the Upstarts’ defence and slamming the ball into the net, making the score 5-1.

A final play by the Spartans saw Pacheco coming down the right side with Hemijah Bean on the post, and a pass to him resulted in a scoop high above the Upstarts’ keeper’s head for Hemijah Bean’s second field goal, capping off the Spartan’s 6-1 victory.
