DUI: Woman Arrested After Insisting On Driving

March 31, 2014

After being warned three times by police officers not to drive as she was under the influence, a woman proceeded to get in her car and drive anyway, resulting in her being promptly arrested.

A police spokesperson said, “On Saturday March 29 at around 3:16am, police were parked in the area of St. George’s Square when they observed a female exiting a night club.

“Officers noticed the woman was unsteady on her feet and she was being assisted by a male. The female then took out her car keys and began to get into her vehicle.

“Officers went over to the woman and asked her if she had consumed any alcoholic beverages, to which she replied yes. The officers advised the female on 3 separate occasions, and that she should not drive and she should seek an alternative method of going home.

“The woman refused to comply with the officers and got into her vehicle and began to drive off. She was promptly arrested for suspicion of driving whilst under the influence. She was taken to Hamilton Police Station where she failed the Alco-analyzer and was then detained.

“A court appearance is expected in due course,” added the police spokesperson.

    Simply foolish!!

    • in the news says:

I don’ t understand why would cops reason with a drunk; warned three times, ahahahhaah na who’s drunk here. Last paragraph says began to drive off. Did they run after the car lol. She is happily stupid drunk,

      • Oh well says:

They cannot arrest her for driving drunk unless she was actually driving. So they had to allow her to atleast move a little to charge her for this.

        • Nisey says:

They can arrest you for just having your keys in the ignition if you are under the influence

      • Desk Job - Not says:

@in the news, are you serious???. They cant arrest her before she turns the key. If they did, you would be screaming abut how unfair they were. I know your kind though. You put down the police and complain about what they do. You complain about the Fire Department because we don’t have many fires. But then, when you have an accident, something is stolen or there is a crime that affects you, you want all the police to help you. When your house catches on fire or a family member gets hurt you finally understand what the firefighters do.

        • AgeBees says:

you don’t have to turn the key – you don’t even have to have the keys in your hand. If you are in your car and your keys are nearby you are deemed to be in control of the vehicle…

    • Mor says:

I would like to that yes I had been drinking and I was accompanied by two of my girl friends. If the officer had said not to drive three times don’t u think one of my friends would have took my keys from me! I have never in my life been harassed like that after stepping my feet outside an establishment with the police parked right next to my car. And to the arresting officer I think u should go back and check the camera’s cause nobody had to walk me to my car he was trying to get a ride home and how did I stumble if u watched me take my shoes off. I am a bartender as well and if I wasn’t capable of driving I could have made a clear judgement not too. So to whoever mind ya business I’m not your concern have a blessed day!

  2. nok says:

Here comes the excuses my granny’s boyfriend’s, aunties, uncle made me drink.

Juss pissed off cauz eye wood give um nun.

  4. Betty Rech says:

why was she so special the police went up and asked her not to drive maybe they need to do that with everyone they see coming out of night clubs or bars

  5. Wouldn't it be better if says:

Wouldn’t it be better if the police took her keys from her and helped her to a taxi? Rather than standing next to her car and waiting for her to drive off? She obviously didn’t get far, but she still could have had an accident and injured someone during that short distance. Wouldn’t preventing a crime have been better?

    • Annie says:

@Wouldn’t it be better: I agree. When you are impaired your cognitive functioning and reasoning are not what they normally would be. Simply telling her not to drive wouldn’t have been enough. Either the police should have taken her keys or they should have instructed her male companion to. What’s the sense of talking to her about it at that point-she wouldn’t be able to comprehend.

With that said, if she knew she was driving she shouldn’t have consumed so much alcohol without having a designated driver or back-up plan of some sort to get home.

I really don’t get how alcohol is legal. My husband is a chronic pain sufferer and the pharmacists treat him like some kind of drug addict just because he needs to take strong narcotics. Yet you can easily buy cigarettes that KILL right there at the pharmacy and alcohol that KILLS right there at the pharmacy! It’s stupid. Alcohol is responsible for more injuries and deaths than marijuana yet alcohol is legal-it’s stupid (and for the record, I don’t even smoke marijuana-I just don’t understand human reasoning sometimes!!!)

      • YADON says:

It’s all about the money for those who call the shots.

        • Suzie Quattro says:

it it’s all about the money why did he warn her three times?

          • Come Correct says:

Reasoning! Did you even read the initial comment, marijuana hater? Can’t believe human stupidity still amazes me. For the record, I quit marijuana cold turkey before you attempt some stupid personal pot head attack. You and Sandy Bottom should go find a special place together with no marijuana…food or fresh water.

            • Sandy Bottom says:

What the hell are you talking about?

    • Anon Ymous says:

How about the police just enforce the law and arrest her for being in charge of a motor vehicle while intoxicated – I’ve not heard of this new three chances process before now…

      • logistics says:

They probably had no power to do anything until she got behind the wheel. Up to that point she had not broken the law.

I have seen the police “advise” people not to get on bikes on front st in the past. Usually people take the hint!

    • Family Man says:

Yeah, maybe the police should just drive her home, get her a glass of water, tuck her into her bed so she’s nice and comfy and give her a call the next morning to see how she is.

FFS the police bent over backwards for her, warning her 3 times not to drive. She can’t get more stupid – without being elected to City Hall.

    • Desk Job - Not says:

The Police are nice and will helpful when we are nice. When people are rude, belittling, and swear , they are not so helpful and need to teach the “public” a lesson the hard way.

      • lmao says:

you sound like de man….**** off!

      • jess says:

some people get stranded becuz of them n the police r definatly not the ones that help….in the end police lik wen people get into trouble…just lik we lik to look at trouble on bernews
18 years old and um just being real

  6. Family Man says:

She should get an extra year off the road for being too stupid to hold a license to drive.

    • Morgan says:

      F*** u! U should mind ur business

    • jess says:

In de end was you there to know wat realli happened…just like morgan said alot of you people just needa mind your own business..and stop bringing her down when your not even sure what happened

  7. GoodIdeaBadIdea says:

Wow – I really wonder what thought process was going through this individual’s head at the time. If a police officer advises you not to drive because they believe you are over the limit, wouldn’t logic dictate that the second you get in the car they would arrest you for being under the influence?

Obviously this individual had to learn that the fire was hot by jumping feet first into it.

    SMH

    • Malachi says:

Maybe her thought process was hindered by the booze?

    • Terry says:

and I really wonder what thought process was going through the officers mind.

  8. Joonya says:

Ok she takes this years DUMB@SS Award!

    • Malachi says:

Hold on Joonya – that award should not be given away too hastily. Bear in mind there are politicians, certain union members, City Hall occupants, and a host of others who should be considered!

  9. Coffee says:

    Can’t , won’t hear , feel !

  10. nuffin but the truth says:

so the cops were being nice to her,so what…that does happen now and then…
but in her case, she had 3 chances and blew it…
    one word for her…STUPID!

  11. Oh gosh says:

A lot of people come out of bars/clubs and drive home. I don’t know about you but I hardly see taxis at 3AM. Best to just stay home and drink! Imagine how many bars would have to close down… SMH I’m not saying it’s right to drink and drive, I’m just saying that almost everyone that goes into a bar to drink comes out over the legal limit and drives home, not to mention the bars and courts benefitting from it financially… Might as well arrest everyone walking out of the bar and getting into the drivers seat.

  12. Davo says:

Sometimes you just need to pick your battles, yes almost everyone coming out of a bar is probably over the limit but they aren’t greeted by a policeman telling you don’t drive.

  13. cousin says:

There must be something MAWI can do to help with her condition, she should check them out.

  14. soul jah says:

Many who have posted comments here have no idea of the POWER that this DRUG has on some of us.

    • Whistling Frog says:

And to think it was made legal…

  15. Godson says:

Ahhhh…I was wondering what kind of ‘warning’ did she receive? Not knowing the whole story, but wouldn’t it have made sense to ‘take’ the keys from her, or persuade the man with her to drive..help her get another lift….take her to the nearest station to allow her to sleep her alcohol off(which she probably ended up doing anyway). I just find it suspicious that they were able to persuade her to pull over once she started driving, but couldn’t prevent her from getting in the car from the beginning…I don’t think it was necessary for her to go to court..Back at the time when Bermuda was the envy of the world for our friendliness, our police officers would have done everything possible (physically), to help the woman in question…again, I ask the question what kind of ‘warning’ did she receive? Instead of a warning, she should/could have received assistance.

  16. Truth is killin' me... says:

Her ego was bigger than the cops…three strikes you’re out!

  17. Smh says:

If she was smoking Medicinal Marijuana instead of Legal Poison Water she would not even thought about driving!!!

  18. MAKE MY DAY says:

Just how “stupid” can this woman be…. She is warned 3 times NOT to drive, by “cops” in uniform – and still drives away drunk!! They would have gotten her for an extreme DUI in my neck-of-the-woods – if she would have tried to play-that-game over here in AZ and that would have meant all kinds of problems for her!!!

They take this DUI thing very seriously!!!

Once the keys go into the ignition …you are driving…s’like a rollerskates…these police did their job….she got home safe…perhaps someone else too…catch a cab.either you accept the responsibility of operating this vehicle, the safty of yourself, others, and personal property, the occasional cat or house pet that may and often do wander into the path of said vehicle…or…police will. The stark reality of the arrest and shock value are apparent and necessary.

    Lock her up!

  21. bermudagirl says:

She had to actually start the car up before they can arrest her so they would have a case against her of deliberate intent
