Man Jailed For Stealing From His Grandparents

March 25, 2014

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Mar 25] a 20 year old man was sentenced to twelve months in prison for stealing jewellery and other items from his grandparents Warwick residence.

John Devonte Johnson, of no fixed abode,  had earlier pleading guilty to stealing almost $6,000 worth of jewellery and other items from his grandparents Warwick residence in January of this year.

The stolen items had been sold on to a ‘cash-for-gold’ operation in Hamilton. The grandparents had followed up on the theft and later learned that Johnson was the identified seller of the items.

This morning, in rejecting a Duty Counsel submission for a non-custodial sentence, the Senior Magistrate pointed out that the pre-sentencing Social Inquiry Report [SIR] indicated that Johnson was not considered to be a person suitable for a community based sentence.

Prosecutor Ms Nicole Smith recommended that a sentence of up to three years should be considered, and the Court also heard that this latest offence was committed by Johnson was done whilst he was on probation for another similar offence .

Johnson’s current twelve months sentence is to be followed by two years probation during which, as the Magistrate ordered, Johnson must be afforded all available rehabilitation programs.

Bad enough to steal from a stranger but your GRANDPARENTS? Seriously dude, you need your a** beat! Now watch the bleeding hearts defend him, saying he was probably misunderstood. What’s really sad is that he’s now probably ruined his relationship with his grandparents.

    • one time says:

I doubt the relationship is ruined with the grandparents. I do agree that this kid needs a serious beat down for doing that. But he must be going through some serious issues to be able to fall so low. Something is missing in this kids life, moral guidance and he won’t find any up Westgate.

  2. Mr. Meoff says:

    A DOPE ON DOPE
Why else would he steal from his family or anyone else for that matter.
    Addiction is a B****.

    • Judge not. This is one reason why our young people are faced with issues like this because pokey Bermudians tend to run their mouth n don’t know what is really n truly happened. To classify him a “dope on dope” is to say you must be in the same boat or supplying him. Homeless is enough to render that there is a very serious problem within his family life… Just saying.. Judge not Mr. Executioner.. Dah

  3. JONESER says:

Nah his grandparents will forgive him eventually.

  5. Binglet says:

  6. Raymond Ray says:

And to think he was already on probation :-( He needed to be sentenced to time for violating the probation order plus, given a new sentence (3 yrs.separately)and when released, place on a another period of probation order!

  7. Young man, you may not have access to this blog site at this point n time; but for whatever reason you allowed yourself to stoop so low, only you can answer that. However, many people talk but they don’t, didn’t n still don’t know your walk. Many of our young folk n some older folk travel with SCARS in their life tbat they don’t know exactly how to deal with the hurt n pains that behooves them. Sometimes a reach out process can make all the difference in our shattered but not destroyed life that could have been as a result of abuse or neglect. Only you know that n perhaps those who may have caused you such pain n grief knows. Your young n people of this island love to pull down instead of lifting up. Fret not yourself because of these nasty gossipers. Your young, u have a custodial sentence n while doing that time, recreate, revamp, renew, restore n restart your life n seek bigger n better things for your life. Remember we live in a narrow mindedness society and you must rise above those that seek to sink your life. You have put a major hole in your life by doing what you done n yes perhaps imprisonment will save you as there is great hope for a new beginning. Meditation over the course of your time should bring solace to all your family.
