March 24, 2014

Premier Craig Cannonier is in London this week to resume talks with Islamic Finance stakeholders at the Global Islamic Finance and Investment Group [IFIG] Conference. He is accompanied by the Minister of Finance Bob Richards and the Secretary to the Cabinet Dr. Derrick Binns.

The Cabinet Office said, “While in London he will also engage in a number of other meetings including a bilateral meeting with Minister Mark Simmons of the Foreign Commonwealth Office, a meeting with HM treasury and a series of interviews with foreign media publications such as CNN, Financial Times, Reuters News and Global Reinsurance.

“The objective of the IFIG Conference is to highlight the necessary regulatory frameworks for Islamic Finance and to outline strategies for successful international collaboration. Bankers and senior government officials from countries such as Bermuda, Bahrain, Brunei, Dubai, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates [UAE], are expected to be in attendance.”

Premier Cannonier commented “It is vital that we continue build on the foundation that is already in place with Islamic Finance stakeholders and to progress our discussions at this very strategic Conference.

“As you are aware, this government is very keen on attracting foreign direct investment to Bermuda to address a number of outstanding infrastructure projects that are vital for our financial recovery. It is also very important that we continue to tell the world about the merits of conducting business in Bermuda through the international media.”

Go forth my sons….b fruitful and multiply our good fortunes!

  2. Mazumbo says:

And cant go on Sherrie J’s show and talk to de people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    SMFH

    • Justin says:

Cannonier doesn’t do interviews with people like Sherrie J for the same reaons why Obama doesn’t do interviews with Fox News.

    • Mike Hind says:

Is Sherrie J the only show you know of?

Why so specific on that show in particular?

      • Shaka zulu says:

You know like many Mike the Sherrie J show is all the way a PLP station! any OBA MP, with exception of a few will never go on her show..Sherrie has her axe to grind for what they did to her hubby!!For the Premier to go on that show is like walking into a lions den before feeding time..LOL

        • Mazumbo says:

          It’s called PUNKING Out

          • Mike Hind says:

So, did Dr. Brown “PUNK Out” when he refused to answer questions from certain media?

Or is this just yet another example of “It’s ok when we do it”?

            • Johnny says:

Do you think it is ok or not. Regardless of what Dr. Brown done. Do you give someone a pass because someone else done something wrong?

              • Mike Hind says:

                The entire point is ridiculous.

Going off because the Premier won’t go on a completely biased talkshow is ridiculous. Acting like he has a responsibility to do so is ridiculous. Acting like he’s somehow not representing the people of Bermuda by not doing so is ridiculous.

The fact that he’s not walking into an opportunity for partisan demagogues to go after him with “gotcha” attacks, logical fallacies and leading questions does not mean he’s not communicating or representing or doing his job and the faux outrage is just more ridiculous propaganda designed to smear and denounce.

                And it’s ridiculous.

              • tricks are for kids says:

@ Johnny,……..That’s THEIR only defense….Everytime they are questioned about something or face an issue that is what you will hear….’Oh well PLP did XYZ”…..It doesn’t make it right nor does it answer any questions asked……SMH…..#kindergartenantics…..
                #wherearetheREALadultsinallofthis……

                • Mike Hind says:

We just had… And continue to have… Over a decade of “the UBP did this…” And NOW it’s bad to point out the hypocrisy of accusing other people of your own behaviour?

                  Really?

                • Suzie Quattro says:

tricks, that such a lame argument.

First, saying ‘the PLP did it’ is not the ‘ONLY’ defense. Unlike when we sent Terry Lister to see a shuttle launch, or Roban to the Paris Satellite Conference, or Bean to the Bahamas to look at docks, there is actually a serious point to this trip. It is different to the PLP trips because it might actually bring business here.

Second, it is absolutely legitimate to bring up the fact that the PLP did something. It shows the constant hypocrisy of the people like you, who felt these things were quite justified when they were in power. It doesn’t automatically make something right if the PLP did it, but it does beg the question why you didn’t say sheet about it when they were doing it, if it is wrong now. If you’re an adult, as you claim, you would understand that.

The PLP are just scared to death that the OBA will succeed where they failed.

        • Rules of Order says:

And you know exactly what color her underwear are also right! How do you know what are the reasons for Sherrie J’s decisions? Again…they know it all!!!!

      • Redman says:

Frankly I’d rather the OBA spent most of their time working on the many issues facing us rather than going on talk shows. Especially one where the ‘moderator’ (lol) may as well be a PLP MP looking for any slip that can be exploited.

The PLP went on talk shows all the time, how’d that work out for Bermie by the way? Clearly the PLP MP’s time on those ‘talk shows’ where PR stunts as it sure didn’t help them run this Island any better!

        • Mazumbo says:

Sherrie J’s show is the # 1 show on de rock where questions will make you work for your money just like Let’s Talk, but they would prefer to take the easy route and go on the other watered down talk shows and play it safe, stay on de porch when de Big Dogs play!
          LMAO

          • Sandy Bottom says:

Sherrie j is a PLP shill. We all know it. She is not an impartial journalist, she’s a self appointed daily party political broadcast.

    • Show Boat says:

I cant believe that anyone would waste time listening to those talk shows. A co-worker of mine is tuned in to them all the time and all I hear are he same two dozen or so people calling in , show after show and day after day. Its enough to make me want to stick pencils in my ears.

    • lucky 7 says:

Sherri J is poison for Bermuda. She just spreads Hate.

    • SMH says:

I’m a local with no title and won’t go on the Sherrie Simmons show. She is awful! Too biased, narrow minded and insites with half truths. Her style of radio talk is loud, constantly repeats the phrase ‘ya know’, and she gives more air time to her voice then her guests. She’s too unprofessional and toxic on a daily basis. Don’t understand why the Broadcasting Commission has not fined her heavily for wtoo many infractions.

  3. Terry says:

    Mazunbo.
    Betty and Chris need updates.
    Piss off.

  4. Robert says:

Coward, cant face the people he swore to help !!

    • Mike Hind says:

Says the guy hiding behind a fake name.

People who live in glass houses and all that.

      • Roger says:

Mike shut up because the minute some little girl step to you, you’ll be the first one calling the POPO.

        • Mike Hind says:

Another big man, hiding behind a fake name.

          Real tough. Real brave.

Also… I’m a grown up. People don’t “step to me”.
          Maybe that’s your problem.

      • JUNK YARD DOG says:

        Mr. Mike Hind.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a very”Good Morning “.

If a 99% of the public choose to use a pen names on Bernews or any other media for that matter is it not their prerogative.

let you heart not be troubled .

        let it be !

Clark Kent was a reporter for a news paper, but as “SUPERMAN” he did great things. I am JUNK YARD DOG and I would like to think that have done great things.

I give more than I get.

What realty matters is the content of the Posts,no body is forcing us to read unproductive Posts.

Bermuda needs to stop living in the past,we can not change yesterdays unfortunate situations, complaining will not make it go away either.

        People make bad decisions .
        Governments make bad decisions.

When I was visiting the USA at the on set of the recession I could not help but notice how unhappy the people became, their attitudes changed dramatically as their economic futures fell into decline.

Are we following in their foot steps.

The next time Mr. Mike Hind you post on Bernews, you would do us a favor and come up with some positive suggestions and on how we can move this country forward.

How about the worlds largest “Car Boot Sale” on the grounds of the Agg Station with 10 % going to the new hospital.

        Every body wins !

        • Mike Hind says:

Tell you what. When it’s your site, you get to tell me how to post.
Until then, take your own advice.

My point is valid, as it WAS the content of the post I was talking about. If someone is showing a distinct lack of courage by making a personal attack while hiding behind a fake name, it’s hypocritical and worth mentioning when they call someone else a coward.

The rest of your post is gibberish.

    • Show Boat says:

Some governments have spent all their time BSing to the people on their shows, while other are working and speaking volumes by what they have been doing!

  5. Coffee says:

Interesting that they will try their best to build on a foundation established by Dr.Brown with the Muslims . I’m sure the meeting with Mr.Mark Simmons would be to assure the FCO that everything between jetgate and the privitization of profit making public entities are above board and for the sole benefit of Bermuda and by no means a friends and family money grab .
Keep your stories straight , the world is watching ; it will be amazing to see Cannonier stumbling through a real press conference as he has had no practice at home.

  6. Nice balance says:

We have sent the dumbest man and the smartest man in the OBA. Have a safe trip hopefully more will come out of this then just a free trip.

  7. Bermuda Boy says:

All of you PLP BIU supporters on here should go to Marc’s betting shop to take out your frustrations, betting on whether the sun will rise tomorrow or not.

    • Suzie Quattro says:

Yeah, why not. After all, according to Bean’s facebook page ‘everybody is a winner’ there. Presumably you can’t lose.

  8. Navin Johnson says:

Close your eyes and imagine Mr Bean meetin wiff de Muslims

  9. Donna C says:

Islamic Finance was on the PLP agenda. It is based on profit sharing and markup. It began in 1983 in Malaysia. Bermuda would do well to look at Islamic Finance as it is alternative to interest base economics. Islamic finance is now a 4.6 trillion dollar business and it is anticipated to grow by 15% per annum. Lets hope that Bermuda can access this market soon as if Bermuda gets into the business it will be a late participant as Ireland, UK, Switzerland, Cayman Islands, Singapore, Luxembourg, have been in the business more than four years.
Bermuda will need to find a niche segment of Islamic Finance to be successful at it.

  10. Looking in says:

Premier Cannonier or Mr.Marc Bean who thinks there is economic terrorism going on.

  11. Ruthless says:

I always wonder why PLP feel that they would win the next election?! I know a lot of people that didn’t come out to vote who have told me that if they do come out next time it wouldn’t be for PLP!

    • frank says:

they will win because by that time oba will have self distruct
the oba is a one term government check it out another trip to get graig out of the way the person that should have gone with bob was david

      • Mike Hind says:

Saying the same thing over and over doesn’t make it true

  12. JUNK YARD DOG says:

When you see your self getting the short end of the stick during the debating process, the secret is to change the subject or throw more wood on the fire.
