Bermuda Finish CARIFTA With Five Medals

April 22, 2014

[Updated] Bermuda has ended the 2014 CARIFTA Games in Martinique with five medals, placing 9th on the overall medal table.

Kyrah Scraders was the island’s top performer with two medals including a gold won a dramatic ‘come from behind’ style, while Sakari Famous [high jump], Jahnai Perinchief [high jump], and Dage Minors  [1500m] also added to Bermuda’s medal tally.

Bermuda had a 13-strong team, with the island’s top young track & field athletes competing against the region’s best. Tiara DeRosa competed in the shot put & discus, Azaire Smith competed in the high jump, Taahira Butterfield competed in the 100m & 200m, Kionje Somner contested the 200m & 400m, Daniel Oatley competed in the 3000m, David Darrell competed in the 800m & 1500m, Michaiah Robinson competed in the 400m & 800m, Chas Smith competed in the triple jump & long jump, while Justin Donawa represented Bermuda in the triple jump.

Speaking after the Games concluded, BNAA President Donna Watson said, “I am very pleased overall with Bermuda’s performances. 5 medals, 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze – not bad for 13 athletes.

“I believe we would have had seven had Dage not run into difficulties, and Justin had problems with his back. He was in 3rd place until the last round of jumps and he couldn’t take another jump because of his back.

“Dage’s blood pressure went sky high and I know it is from racing in the cold to coming here to the extreme heat and humidity that we had. He was comfortably siting in 3rd position at that time.

“I am very pleased and especially with Kyrah, what a tough 800m race. Jahnai in the high jump battling with the Jamaicans, Sakari jumping in near hurricane conditions and still coming out with a silver, Dage giving it his all in the 1500m to get that bronze…a President couldn’t ask for more,” added Ms. Watson.

The powerhouse Jamaicans topped the overall table with a massive 88 medals, marking the 30th straight time Jamaica has recorded the most medal wins in a CARIFTA Games.

According to the CARIFTA Facebook page, Trinidad & Tobago was 2nd on the medal table, Barbados was 3rd, Guyana was 4th, Guadeloupe was 5th, Dominica with 6th, Bahamas was 7th, Grenada was 8th, Bermuda was 9th, Saint Lucia was 10th, Suriname was 11th, Martinique was 12th, St Kitts and Nevis was 13th, Antigua and Barbuda was 14th, Curacao was 15th, the British Virgin Islands was 16th and the Cayman Islands was 17th.

Bermuda’s swimmers will now see action, with the swimming portion of the 2014 CARIFTA Games set to get underway in Aruba today.

Update 9.10am: Shadow Sports Minister Michael Weeks said, “”On behalf of the Progressive Labour Party I extend congratulations to the 2014 Carifta Team.

“In particular I would like to congratulate our medalists – Kyrah Scraders, who won a gold medal in 800m and a silver medal in 1500m, Janhai Perinchief, who won a silver in men’s high jump, Sakari Famous, also a silver medal in women’s high jump, and Dage Minors, who brought home a bronze medal in men’s 1500m.

“We also extend our appreciation to the entire Bermuda team who competed well at the Carifta games. We expect good things from these athletes in the upcoming years and encourage them all to continue developing their respective crafts and working towards the Olympics.

“Finally, we commend and thank Ms. Donna Watson and her team of trainers and administrators who help to ensure Bermuda is well represented and are ambassadors for our country.”
