Bermuda To Host RIMS ‘Bermuda Reception’

April 24, 2014

10,000 people are set to attend the Risk and Insurance Management Society [RIMS] 2014 Conference in Denver, and Bermuda will be in full force with a delegation of almost 200 people, including Premier Craig Cannonier, Minister of Education and Economic Development Dr Grant Gibbons, Minister of Finance Bob Richards, Cabinet Secretary Dr Derrick Binns,  Permanent Secretary Ross Webber, Ministry of Education and , Deputy Chairman of the Bermuda Business Development Agency [BDA] David Cash.

The BDA, along with key industry executives, will be there to represent the depth of expertise in the Bermuda market which has long earned Bermuda the reputation as ‘The World’s Risk Capital.’

BDA Deputy Chairman David Cash, said, “Bermuda has always distinguished itself from its competitors by its ability to offer full suite risk management solutions to insurance and reinsurance buyers. Bermuda was the birthplace of the captive insurance vehicle and to this day remains the oldest and largest captive domicile.

“Bermuda continues to demonstrate its ability to innovate as evidenced by the impressive numbers being reported by Bermuda in the Insurance Linked Securities space. It is through the collaboration of the commercial insurance, reinsurance and captive markets that Bermuda continues to be a preferred domicile for all risk management needs.

“RIMS is our largest event and it gives us the opportunity to thank our existing clients and develop new relationships. Our lead position, as a one-stop-shop for risk management solutions, is on full display here through the Bermuda delegation which is further enhanced by the participation of our Government and the Bermuda Monetary Authority.”

“Bermuda’s iconic exhibit will be a hub of activity in the main exhibition hall. This two storey Bermuda styled showpiece will serve as a key meeting place for industry and clients alike.

“BDA along with the help of industry volunteers will make sure that all clients, ambassadors and friends of Bermuda are welcomed and presented with Bermuda’s legendary tote bag advertising Bermuda as ‘The World’s Risk Capital’. Various meetings with prospective and existing clients will also take place, in the upstairs meeting room as well as interviews with press.

“Bermuda will also host a Bermuda Reception, themed the Bermuda Blues Club, on Tuesday, April 29, at the Four Seasons Hotel. This exclusive event provides an excellent opportunity to network with clients. T

“his year the BDA decided to jazz things up and will feature an array of Bermudian talent ranging from culinary delights to signature Bermudian cocktails, topped off with the jazz and blues band, HTG [formerly Heritage], which will be led by the very talented Bermudian saxophone player, Gianluca Gibbons.”

“Gianluca and his fellow band members are currently studying at La Sierra University in Southern California.  The evening’s festivities will kick off with a few welcoming remarks from the CEO of the BDA and The Premier of Bermuda, leading into the smooth blues and jazz sounds of Heritage.

Gianluca shared his enthusiasm on being chosen to perform, saying, “I am looking forward to being involved in this great venture. With all my efforts in music and business, bridging gaps between Bermuda and the international scene has always been a great motivator for me. This opportunity is nothing short of a blessing, and representing my homeland Bermuda is an honor. We are really excited about this opportunity.”

When asked about the Bermuda Reception, Premier Craig Cannonier said, “Our presence in Denver is to support the business development efforts of many Bermuda companies that operate in the risk management sector.  We want our international business community as well as their clients to know that the Government of Bermuda appreciates their business and we are here to support and enhance doing business in Bermuda.

“I am also delighted to see this level of Bermudian talent on show at this event; in particular, I am thrilled to witness the performance by an upcoming Bermudian entertainer, Gianluca. I am a huge proponent for supporting rising local talent.”

“Gosling’s, Bermuda’s flagship export, will add to the Bermudian flare by showcasing their prized Family Reserve “Old Rum” for sampling by guests. To reinforce the Bermuda Blues theme, Gosling’s has also designed signature drinks to accompany the many local specialties such as fish chowder and rockfish with banana.

“To truly show all that Bermuda has to offer, the plasma screens at the Conference and the Reception will feature stunning video footage of the island, courtesy of the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

“The Bermuda Reception has all of the right ‘ingredients’ and attendees to highlight all that Bermuda has to offer. The Reception is being organised by the BDA team with support from Cher Przelomski, VP of Planning Factory Bermuda.”

  1. Observation says:

Love how so many Government officials make time to attend this conference, yet does not show the same sense of urgency to entertain down on their luck locals.

The ease of influence that IB has over Government severely trumps the influence that Bermudians have.

I think you are right obsvervation…. We have some serious issues @ home to deal with…. Surely, some sort of similar relationship-building initiatives are needed right now to gain our support and confidence…. Its not a bad thing what they are doing here, but one has to ask, do ALL of them have to attend this conference? Jusathawt

    @Observation

I am not saying that the Government should do less, or more, for locals. That is not the point I will make.

My point is that you can’t say that IB is not vitally important to the economy and does not merit the attendance of top officials.

Again, maybe they could be doing the same for more local situations, but let’s not let that cloud what is happening here.

Gov. official showing support to Bermuda’s IB sector is NOT a bad thing.

Yes, they (IB) “make millions” as Craig Burt pointed out to try and get people mad at whitey, but it is a short sighted view in that IB needs millions in reserves to underwrite risk in the high stakes global risk market. And, they could easily go elsewhere and make millions there too.

We need to respect all the good that IB does provide Bermuda.

That headline made it seem for a second that Bermuda was hosting the conference.

Now *that* would have been something (not that it wouldn’t have also been wild trying to host something of that magnitude in the first place)

  4. ABM says:

Whats funny to me is how this event was condemed by these same people under the PLP administration, but it is now praised under the OBA. SMH Not to mention how the PLP sent around 5 to 10 individuals each year and were told it was a waste of money by the people of Bermuda. Now the OBA is going and not one person is complaining. In addition no one is saying anything about the 200 strong group of people that are in attendance under the OBA. Make up your mind Bermuda!!! Surely if we hold one accountable we should hold the other to the same light!

  5. Wannabe says:

ABM – BERMUDA will have a delegation of 200. Not the OBA. Most of the people attending from Bermuda are in the Bermuda insurance industry.
