We need to get back to the 3Cs in Bermy. I’ve seen tourist not sure what a cross walk is for in Bermuda because vehicles keep zooming past it while they stand at the side. Those who have grown accustomed to the new Bermuda realize they must walk out a few feet before the driver/rider decides they’ll slow down. How we treat our residents is how we treat our visitors. If someone wants to drive/ride like they’re in downtown NYC then move there because OUR tourist didn’t spend to go there.

  2. Paul Revere says:

We need to get RID of the blinking AMBER and go back to proper signals at Traffic Lights and Pedestrian Crossings

  3. How pays attention to a blinking amber – make it (all of them) red lights!!

  4. Rockfish#1 says:

What time did this accident occur?

  5. The Dark Knight Returns says:

I am happy to hear that the young man is going to be alright. With that said Man there are some great comments here. The powers that be do a disservice to this country where traffic lights are concerned. No pedestrian crossing should blink amber to stop vehicular traffic. We need to get rid of the amber light and just have red and green. We need to remove all amber lights from pedestrian crossing now and replace them with red lights. Amber lights make people try and speed through them more so the. Red lights. Sort it out now.

    • Question says:

      Hey Batman:

I am happy to inform you and others on this blog of one simple fact – - the crossing in question is actually A RED LIGHT CROSSING. The light turns RED at the crossing, with an added BLINKING AMBER prior to the crossing to WARN that the RED LIGHT is ACTIVE.

In other locations, the BLINKING AMBER light is there as an added warning that someone is using the crossing – - – as there are no actually lights to stop traffic for crossings only (meaning without the added feature of a intersection – 2 roads coming together).

It amazed me how judgmental Bermudians can be about situations when it is clear they have no actually idea about it.

If people actually drove defensively in this country, instead of being only concerned with their own wants/desires while driving, we wouldn’t have the issues on the roads that we do – plain and simple.

      Question for you – -

If you are driving and see any light blinking, would you not pay attention and look out for why?

      Q

  6. The Dark Knight Returns says:

@ Question, you are correct that the light in question is a red, amber and green light. However, most people treat an amber light the same as a green light. In regards to the blinking amber lights at crossing I am not following you. It is very easy to change them out and make them red lights. I as I am sure you do, travel this island on a regular bases and I observe many people race through amber lights. Let’s fix the problem now as I child struck on a pedestrian is one too many.

    • Question says:

You missed my point – - changing the blinking amber lights will not solve your problem. There is no where in the world that red lights are used for a crossing without an intersection – nowhere.

You are confusing the traffic lights at an intersection like the Paget Stop Lights, and its amber light (which doesn’t blink, by the way).

And trust me, your suggestion of just changing out the lights for red lights as “EASY” – is far from the truth. Those lights are very specific and their cost is nothing to laugh at.

But we need to be honest about things as well – - –

Question – - if the child pressed the button to cross (which is very likely) and then waited for the light to change (which is very likely) – - THERE IS NOTHING THAT AN AMBER LIGHT/RED LIGHT or any light for that matter that would have stopped the driver from running the light if they (the driver) weren’t paying attention (which is probably very likely)

      Answer that question

      Q

      • Sandy Bottom says:

There are thousands and thousands of places where a crosswalk has a red light, and not at an intersection. It’s certainly commonplace in the UK.

An amber light tells the driver he might have to stop. A red light tells the driver he MUST stop.

Drivers here ignore amber lights. A red light would be safer.

  7. Accident waiting to happen says:

I have lost count of the times when I have crossed that crosswalk when the light is already red and the noise is going off telling me that it is safe to cross, and someone jumps the red light anyway. I always wait until all lanes have come to a complete stop.

Also, trying to pull out of the junction from the Broadway going West to the one going East, e.g. by ISIS, is SO DANGEROUS!! We really need a traffic light up there before the ISIS cut-through and the Cockscrew junction to allow traffic to join the Broadway going out of town safely. In a car you cannot see anything coming the other way at all and literally have to pull out and hope to God that no one is speeding along the Broadway.

It really is an accident waiting to happen.

  8. Guy Carri says:

Sorry to the boy and family. That’s scary stuff.

That crosswalk is in an TERRIBLE spot. Right after the corner. Are you kidding? Nice big stretch of TWO LANES (only spot on the island!) and then a corner and crosswalk. This with the thinned out road enforcement, come on.
Is that crosswalk light connected to the amber light right before Corkscrew? If it’s not it needs to be. Or put the red light way further ahead (but not the crosswalk) so vehicles see it/stop earlier.

    • Voter (original) says:

The amber light before Corkscrew is connected to the crosswalk light – it flashes to tell you that the crosswalk light is turning red, which you cannot see until you turn the corner, but if you slow down at the flashing amber then you should be able to stop in plenty of time for the crosswalk.

  9. Mumbo Jumbo says:

Intall a tasteful instruction on what to do for our visitors…maybe in bronze or brass and bolt it to a concrete pillar or an a wall right there…

    • Eye of Horus says:

What would that be? Instruct the visitor to hold up a sign that say’s, “Hi I’m a visitor! Please show me how courteous & caring your population claims to be & let me use the crosswalk.”

  10. 1minute says:

Those crossings are not dangerous! The drivers who refuse to drive at the speed limit are. The amount of people I see running red lights and stop signs is ridiculous.
There are reasons why we have a 35kph speed limit. (45 would be better, but seeing the speeds people do with a 35 kph limit, I know why they won’t raise it).
My daugther has almost been hit there numerous times. I walk regularally around Hamilton and 3-4 times a month I have to stop mid way on the crossing so I am not run over.
We need to install speed and traffic light cameras.

    • Accident waiting to happen says:

Totally agree. The driving here is just atrocious!

People complain about how dangerous that corner is, but there are so so many warnings there about the need to slow down…the SLOW painted on the road, the sleeping policeman lines, the flashing amber lights, the traffic lights, the “sharp bend” signs, the new sign showing you your current speed…not to mention the fact that there are two junctions joining that road (Corkscrew and from West bound Broadway), and that you’re approaching a pedestrian crossing, a bus stop and a roundabout….the thing this spells out is SLOW THE F**K DOWN! But people end up blaming the “dangerous” road anyway…SMH!
