Govt: Water Quality Well Within Safety Standards

April 17, 2014

The water quality at all beaches tested was well within the safety standards for swimming and no further “greaseballs” have been found, the Government said today.

The Ministry said, “Yesterday [Apr 16] beach water quality samples were taken by Department of Health officials at Elbow Beach, Grape Bay, Warwick Long Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Hungary Bay, John Smiths Bay, Clearwater Beach, Shelly Bay, Tobacco Bay, and Snorkel Park and a thorough beach inspection was carried out by Health officials.

“Results from those samplings [above] showed that enterococci counts were very low again for all beaches – between zero to six cfu/100ml. EPA guidelines state that a single day sample should be less than 104 cfu/100ml.

“Therefore the water quality at all beaches tested was well within the safety standards for swimming. These results have now been uploaded to the Government portal website.

“Results from water sampling carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday also determined the water quality to be well within acceptable limits for bathing and are posted on the Government portal.

“Additionally, staff members for the Department of Parks checked all beaches again today for greaseballs and found no greaseballs present. Parks crews will continue to check beaches over the holiday weekend.”

Lol no surprise Snorkel Park is the dirtiest. Good thing I don’t give them any more business after the way me and my friends were treated by their staff last summer.

If they don’t withdraw it they need to present evidence to the contrary. In the absence of both Bermuda needs to get get more assertive.

Why would they with that limited amount of testing results? Am I the only one wondering what happened to 9/4/14 & what the results would have been on other days. There isn’t even any other contaminant testing done.

      • Other days ... says:

The results would be all over the map [depends on a lot of things]

If you look at the results from the 2008 study performed on behalf of the Department of Health counts vary tremendously between test dates. Counts can be off the charts one day but be completely negligible a few days later.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s better to “wonder” what’s going on with something by asking the appropriate people/organisations before making comments with negative connotations online???
On 8/4/14, the sample from Snorkel Park was the only one approaching the limit of safe levels. Seems like they conducted another sampling on 9/4/14 at that site to see if the problem was ongoing.

The US would come out like a raging bull if the shoe were on the other foot. Its typical of most Americans to shoot off at the mouth without the proper information. They need to be MADE to correct their mistake and WITHDRAW their statement by whoever the powers that be are.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Grape Bay and it was still covered in the poo balls with more washing up. Please please be honest. I’m not trying to destroy the tourist industry. I am simply stating the truth.
