PLP Joins In Marking 2014 Public Health Week

April 10, 2014

The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party has joined in marking Public Health Week with Shadow Health Minister Zane DeSilva expressing that exercising and eating right can reduce the need for expensive medication and can improve the quality of life of Bermudians.

Shadow Health Minister Zane Desilva said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins with healthcare professionals across the island in marking Public Health Week.

The theme for 2014, “Building a Healthy Bermuda” is timely as poor diet, lack of exercise and poor health choices combined with the stress many Bermudians are facing due to joblessness are taking a devastating toll on the health of our people and on their pocketbooks.

“Today, many Bermudians are forced to go without health insurance because they simply can’t afford the high fees. Many are choosing between keeping their lights on and paying for their medication.

“While living a healthy lifestyle can’t change that, exercising and eating right can reduce the need for expensive medication and can improve the quality of life of Bermudians.

“Diabetes and Heart Disease continue to be a major medical challenges for many Bermudians. It is time to examine higher sin taxes on items such as candies, deep fried foods and cigarettes. These funds could be used by government to assist with not only subsidizing those in need, but towards education regarding healthy lifestyle choices and free health screening.

“As we seek to build a healthy Bermuda, let us remember those among us who are struggling under the weight of skyrocketing insurance fees and medical costs and begin looking at solutions that will insure that every Bermudian has access to affordable, quality healthcare regardless of their income.

“As we seek to build a healthy Bermuda let us all examine our lives and seek ways to eat better, exercise more and take care of ourselves properly,” added Mr. DeSilva.

Now instead of making things more affordable you want to tax us more…

“higher sin taxes on items such as candies, deep fried foods and cigarettes”

You are not helping, you are hurting us PLP.

Serioulsy, do people not know about diet and exercise? Is this really new news for anyone? Will the PLP get on board with the breaking news that water is wet too?

  4. Root_it_out says:

“As we seek to build a healthy Bermuda” This after the PLP acted like a cancer through the economy and then performed financial rape on the ‘patient’.

We all need to work together on Health of our entire population and encourging more healthy choices. Hospital and insurance costs affect us all and are a drain on our economy.

Seriously, some people still don’t get it- or think they are not in the overweight or obese or unhealthy bracket.
Many of us still make unhealthy decisions daily. Sometimes a nudge in the right direction helps. Sin taxes are one idea. Hopefully more doctors will give the prescription of ‘E’ – excercize, to those who need it!

Pangea – Bermuda water is perfectly fine! Think of the waste in energy (carbon footprint) of bringing Water from the Alps! Not to forget the plastic bottles involved – energy to make, transport and dispose of.

Use a refillable bottle and save money and the environment.
