Regiment To Undertake Exercise This Weekend

April 11, 2014

Bermuda’s soldiers will be out in force over the weekend in a major exercise designed to bring the Regiment to peak performance in preparation for its annual overseas camp in Canada.

Troops will be deployed all over the east end of the Island by land and sea in an exercise named April Advance.

Regiment Adjutant Major Ben Beasley said: “Exercises like these are an important part of the Regiment’s training and testing and ensure we make sure we make the most of our overseas deployment.

“Soldiers from all specialities will be deployed around Ferry Reach, Paget Island and Cooper’s Island throughout the weekend in as realistic conditions as possible focussing on large sub unit manoeuvres.”

Maj Beasley added: “One of the many roles we perform is aid to the civil power, and April Advance will provide a testing scenario aimed at ensuring a highly-skilled and professional response should we ever be called upon.

“Conventional exercises such as this are the bedrock of numerous other situations that we could face: every asset of our command, control, leadership, planning and logistics will be tested.

“Those who do not have a robust understanding of military training may not appreciate that if we succeed in a high tempo conventional situation it bodes well for us in many other circumstances. Rest assured that we do not forecast a need for to operate in our traditional role any time soon – this is a means to test a variety of scenarios. ”

Maj Beasley said the exercise, which will run over Saturday and Sunday, will involve the use of blank ammunition and illumination flares, particularly during the hours of darkness.

He added: “All the areas used for training will be marshalled by Regiment soldiers and the public should avoid areas being used for training.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are sure the public appreciates the need for the Regiment to conduct this kind of large-scale exercise.”

No, the public does not see the need for this silly ‘exercise’. Its a waste of my tax dollars having you running around in grease paint, playing soldier boy.

Why don’t we take a lesson from Costa Rica or Iceland and abolish the Bermuda version of Dad’s Army. Spend the money on education. It’s quite clear that education is an area that needs substantial improvement, not protecting our borders from invading Russian troops.

COOPER’S Island on a Week End…whoever planned this is a screw loose!

If the soldier boys are on PUBLIC property unless Marshall Law has been stated, any member of the Public can be there too.

West gate is public property too, doesn’t mean you can waltz up there anytime you want. Perhaps you don’t realize that most of these soldiers work elsewhere Monday to Friday so they are only able to train on the weekends.
