Swimmers Capture Five More CARIFTA Medals

April 24, 2014

Ashley Irby, Maddy Moore, Jesse Washington and Emma Harvey continued their medal winning form, capturing five more medals at the 2014 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Aruba today [Apr 24].

A BASA spokesperson said, “After the morning we were well placed with 6 finals and the team was hungry to surpass our best CARIFTA result ever. First up was Emma Harvey in the 200 IM and she was in no mood to play second fiddle. From the first lap of fly to the last lap of free she was dominant. Her time of 2:34:22 crushed the Bermuda age group record by Jenny Smart since 1987 of 2:39.22.

“Next event was the 100 freestyle and first up was Ethan‎ Daley in the 11-12 Boys. He had a gutsy swim leading in the first lap of the race but the bigger swimmers caught him and he finished in 5th.

“Ashley Irby was in the 11-12 girls event and had a great race. She was slow off the start but was able to catch up midway on the second lap. With a flurry at the finish she grabbed the bronze with a new age group record taking it from Ashley Yearwood.

“Next was Maddy Moore fresh off her record breaking swim in the morning. After building the same lead as the morning she seemed to fatigue in the last 25 meters and was pushed into the silver medal.

“Jesse finished off the 100 frees with a great strategy to relax the stroke and race the second 50. He surged to the lead and held them off for the gold while lowering his record from the morning.

“Our final swim was Emma Harvey in the 200 fly. This was truly an amazing performance. She lead the first lap and then fought off a challenge from one competitor only to see another girl surge into the lead. Once again her determination showed as she battled back in the last 50 to take her second gold for the night.

“She had left everything in the pool and needed help to get out. The old Bermuda age group record was held by Ashley Yearwood at 2:58.45 but the new record is 2:36:25.

“What an exciting night of swimming‎ from our team. 5 medals from 6 swims and we surpassed our best Carifta medal total by 2 with still one day left to go.”
