Burch Wins Gold Medal At Charlotte Grand Prix

May 17, 2014

Bermuda Olympian Roy-Allan Burch snared gold last night [May 16] in the 4×100 free relay at the Charlotte Grand Prix meet, holding off a hard charging Canada “A” team by 3:23.92 to 3:24.09.

Burch swam the third leg delivering a solid 51.05 split while in hard training to help the team to the result on the first day of a three day high power meet.

Earlier in the evening Michael Phelps, starting a comeback with a possible eye on Rio 2016, put away a strong field to win the 100 butterfly – an event that he may have eyes on for a four-peat in Brazil.

The 18 time Olympic gold medalist is one of many top caliber swimmers at the meet, illustrating the level of talent the Bermudian swimmer is up against.

After the race Burch observed “We have been training hard, and I am not rested by any stretch of the imagination, so to produce this result is pleasing and a satisfying step towards the 2014 goal of delivering a top performance at Commonwealth Games.”

Burch is swimming his best event, the 50 freestyle, today and will be looking to see how all the components can fit together as another test run prior to Bermuda National Championship on June 5-8 and subsequently Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

You can watch a live video stream of the event here.
