Youth Orchestra To Host ‘School’s Out’ Concert

May 30, 2014

On Sunday, June 1 beginning at 4.00pm, the Bermuda Youth Orchestra will present its second annual School’s Out Concert, marking the end of the school year and the conclusion of another period of concentrated musical development. The concert will be held at St. John’s Church in Pembroke.

The Bermuda Youth Orchestra [BYO] has several branches and all of those will be showcased. The Wind Ensemble, the String and Full Orchestra, and the Clarinet Choir will be performing a variety of pieces to entertain the audience.

Stepping into the conducting frame for this concert will be Mr. Sheldon Fox, the Music Teacher at Sandys’ Secondary Middle School. He will be sharing these duties with Miss Tiffany Fox and Karen Carlington who lead the strings and winds programme at CedarBridge Academy and the Berkeley Institute.

Maj. Dwight Robinson said, “The BYO is a developmental programme for all involved. The students are developing their skills and talents as are the instructors. The students are learning to work with other families of instrumentalists the strings with the winds and vice versa.

“Additionally, they are learning to work with themselves as is the case with the Clarinet Choir. This small unit demands that each individual holds his or her own part alone. There is no one else to lean on, and so the smaller ensemble helps the student to build his or her confidence at playing.”

“Most music instructors in Bermuda don’t have the opportunity to conduct mixed families of instruments. In the main it is usually all winds or all strings. Also, I’ve been fortunate to be exposed conducting some more complex pieces and more complex ensembles. I’ve stepped aside on this occasion to provide these learning opportunities for my colleagues in the BYO. The experience is invaluable, creating opportunities for performers to appreciate the meaningfulness of various conducting gestures.

“The students have been busy preparing themselves. The Clarinet Choir, for instance, meets every Thursday at CedarBridge for rehearsal starting at 7.45am. Students from Saltus, BHS, Warwick Academy, Berkeley Institute, and a number of Home Schools make the trek each Thursday evening to get to regular orchestra rehearsals also. The commercial schools, including The Menhuin Foundation and Bermuda School of Music, also join in the hard work and fun music-making.”
