CedarBridge Academy‘s annual Multicultural Day took place today [May 23], bringing together staff and students for a themed assembly, a talk from guest speaker Reverend Musa from St. John’s Anglican Church, and general revelry in the school’s decorated rooms and hallways.

A spokesperson said, “CedarBridge Academy wound down Heritage Month today, with the final Multicultural Month event, the Annual Multicultural Day. This is the 13th Annual Multicultural Day. What began as a day to celebrate the multiple heritages that exist in the school has ballooned into a month of events that culminate in the May 23 Multicultural Day.”

“Usually this event is held the day before the May 24 holiday,” said Donna Swainson-Robinson, one of the founding members of the Multicultural Committee. “This year we have outdone ourselves. The decorations look very nice, especially when you walk in the building.”

“Advisories, individual students, teachers, and other members of staff worked to make this day a success. The halls were decorated with displays of countries, there were electronic displays of countries in the library, and even a display of food from one advisory.

“Students participated in an assembly that will speak to the various aspects of multiculturalism. The guest speaker was Reverend Musa from St. John’s Anglican Church; he is from South Africa. Many of the events taking place have been organized by students and teachers.”

“There were up to 18 different countries represented at CedarBridge Academy, between staff and students. The countries at CedarBridge Academy include Australia, Azores, Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Nigeria, Peru, Portugal, St. Kitts, Trinidad, United Kingdom, and the United States – and we cannot forget St. David’s, for we have been told that it has a culture of its own.

“Students were also allowed to embrace other aspects of multiculturalism that are not covered by any one country, such as religion or ways of life; hence, in one or two instances, individuals embraced the goth lifestyle and the western, amongst others.”
