Floristry Student’s Online Education Appeal

June 25, 2014

1598048_1403644159.8112A local student who is looking to further her education in floristry in the United Kingdom has turned to popular crowd funding website GoFundMe hoping to raise the necessary funds.

Alexandra Arruda has been working in the floristry industry for more than four years, traveling to the United Kingdom in order to complete her professional qualifications.

She is returning home to Bermuda in order to work and save money towards her education in the meantime, but hopes that her online appeal will aid her in putting together enough money to live and learn in the U.K. over the course of the 2015 school year as she returns to The Manchester College for Floristry Level 3.

Ms. Arruda’s GoFundMe page says, “I have currently finished my Level 2 qualification and would love to continue my education in this industry, but I do not have the funds for the next year. I have recently graduated with all distinctions.”

“Floristry is something I have always had a passion for and I want to continue with it. It has become my goal and passion in life to become what I have always wanted to be and that is a qualified florist in Bermuda. I want to be able to bring more talent into the small pool of Bermudian florists.

“It is sad to know that there are only two qualified Bermudians in this line of work out of 65,000 people. Once I get a few more years of experience, along with the qualifications I need, I want to be able to open my own shop and offer more jobs to locals and foreign workers, and give work experience to a younger generation who are interested in this line of work.”

“The reason I’m writing this is to receive help accumulating funds for Level 3. After getting information from the Manchester College, the cost for that class has tripled due to cuts in government funding for that course. The cost for this course is £7,500 [approximately $12,500] for the school year beginning in September 2014. Hopefully this price changes and is less than the estimated cost by September 2015.”

“Also the cost of living in the United Kingdom would be another reason I would appreciate help with my schooling fees. Living in the U.K. for one month costs about £795 – £1,775 [approximately $1,350 - $3,010]. For my stay in the U.K. for about one year, it will cost me in total about £9,540 – £21,300 [approximately $16,190 - $36,141].

“I am very determined about being a florist and am happy to say that I am actually doing something I love, so for any amount towards my goal, I will be forever grateful.”
