BHeC: Spending More, But Living Shorter Lives

The Bermuda Health Council has released a  graphic outlining the discrepancy in healthcare costs on the island and life expectancy, with several nations shown to achieve longer average life spans with less money spent on healthcare.

The graphic compares healthcare spending and life expectancy between Bermuda and the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The simple graph shows that, despite spending more on healthcare, Bermuda’s life expectancy still lags behind Canada,

    I think they cause and effect may be the other way around than is stated above. I think perhaps the reason that we spend more is because the life expectancy is lower. If more people have more diseases and have to get treated more often then more will have to be spent to cover that.

    What we need to do is to generate a healthier community with more wellness and this number should, in the long term decrease. I am not saying that this is the only issue but I am certain that it plays a significant role.
