Photos & Video: Champion Taekwondo Opens

June 6, 2014

Providing the public with the opportunity to get fit, stay limber, and learn self-defense tactics, Champion Taekwondo in St. George’s ranks as the island’s first elite taekwondo training centre.

Run by Master Edmond Johnson, a fifth degree black belt in the art of moosooldo taekwondo, Champion Taekwondo offers classes for both children and adults, with styles of the martial art suited to different age groups; private instruction is also available.

Master Johnson said, “We’re Bermuda’s first elite taekwondo training centre, which is located in the Olde Towne of St. George’s on Water Street, so if you’re in St. George’s, please come down.”

“Right now we offer the public sport taekwondo classes and traditional taekwondo classes. Sport taekwondo caters to someone between the ages of 10 to about 35; it’s a real high pace, fast pace style. Then I do offer traditional classes for the older adults, and we have Pilates and kids’ martial arts classes.

“I do offer private classes by appointment. We have a group class, so on Tuesday and Thursday nights, you can bring your kids here from 6.00pm until 7.00pm and we’ll train them hard in taekwondo.

“Taekwondo will keep you absolutely, 100 percent limber, which means that you’ll be totally flexible to do any and everything throughout your daily life, whether it’s physical or metaphysical. Taekwondo gives you the flexibility to change and adapt.”

“Other than judo, taekwondo is the only striking martial art that is officially Olympic-recognized. I’m currently the national coach for Bermuda and I train about 10 black belt athletes who will be traveling abroad and competing and flying the Bermuda flag very soon.

“My athletes get quite a range of experience, including national, collegiate, and elite athlete status. We have an athlete right now, Peter Mcglashun, training off in Canada, and some athletes have even gone as far as France and Croatia to train.

“If you’re looking to get involved in taekwondo in St. George’s, our school is located above Tavern by the Sea, so it’s just off of Somers Wharf, Water Street. Walk up the stairs, we’re on the second floor.

“You can reach me online and, if you have a child that’s interested, bring your child and reply to this post on Bernews and I will give you a free uniform when your child starts up.”
