Police: Increase In Reported Motorcycle Thefts

June 2, 2014

Recently there has been an increase in motorcycles and auxiliary cycles reported stolen from various locations throughout the island, the Bermuda Police Service said.

“Members of the public are reminded to ensure that before leaving their motorcycle or auxiliary cycle unattended, it is secured with a good quality motorcycle lock, in addition to the handlebar lock,” added a police spokesperson.

“When parking a motorcycle or auxiliary cycle outside overnight, it should be appropriately secured and left in a busy, well-lit area if at all possible.

“Any suspicious individuals or activity near parked motorcycles or auxiliary cycles should be reported to the main police telephone number 295-0011 at the earliest opportunity.”

    • PBanks says:

I think that anywhere that is not in a secure company facility parking lot (underground, preferably) is fair game for thieves.

  2. Benny says:

These bike thieves are using trucks these day….so a “good lock” isnt stopping them!

  4. Truuufff says:

It’s pretty dam sad that we have to drive a piece of rubbish bike in order for it to not get stolen by someone who feels entitled to have it. This is BS Bermuda! Pathetic.

If I catch someone in the act of stealing my bike………I’m gonna be locked up for murder with an explanation, your worship!

No point in calling the police because they don’t come anyway. And that’s a fac.t And if you want a copy of the police report you have to pay $100 cash and then come back in 2 days for the report.

  8. Priince says:

Maybe the bermuda police should look into these shipping companies that would ship large items like bikes, saying that because you don’t need proof of owner to ship out of bermuda .

i saw a few days ago that a bike was stolen outside the government office.i drove up there later that day and there is not one camera on the whole street?i know people are going to say it would not of made a difference as police would not look anyway but i don’t know the answer to that.several years ago my bike was cleaned out by a car on church street and i mean demolished.when i asked the police to look they said the camera was pointing the wrong way so they could only see the back of cars.when i pointed out that the car would have been badly damaged and no matter what angle you looked from you would have seen something as it happened at around three in the morning i was told we had a look already sorry.thanks for letting me rant, that was years ago and i am still pissed.apparently bike theft is low on the important list but when it happens to you believe me it is high on the list.

  12. Hamilton Worker says:

I work in Hamilton and there have been about 6 incidents in the last few months where immediate friends and colleagues have had bikes either vandalized or stolen. For one incident, we saw it happening outside the window and called the police who took too long to arrive so the culprits left. We even caught one incident on the work CCTV, however the culprit wore a helmet with a tinted visor and there was no other way of identifying him. We even had a guest worker in the office who had his rental scooter taken. All these scooters were locked too. They are being hotwired and stolen via relatively simple methods, or the seats and boxes are being forced open to look at what’s inside.
