A statement from Digicel said, “Wayne has been at the helm of Digicel Bermuda for the last six years and, in that time, has driven the success of the team taking Digicel Bermuda from a pure mobile provider to a full service business solutions provider proudly serving some of the country’s largest companies.

In that time, the business has gone from strength to strength and we have achieved a number of significant milestones including the launches of 4G and Digicel Business. The island of Bermuda has one of the highest data penetrations in the world and I am proud to have been a part of that innovation drive.”

Looking to the future, he continued; “The time is right for me to move on to some new opportunities but I am delighted to be staying with the Digicel family by accepting the role of non-executive vice chairman on the board of Digicel Bermuda. “In my short time with the company, I’ve seen first-hand what a dynamic and passionate group of individuals we have at Digicel and look forward to continuing the great work of Wayne and the team. As always, our focus will be on ensuring that our customers benefit from our commitment to deliver the best of the best to them.”

Digicel COO for the Caribbean and Central America, Claudio Hidalgo, commented; “I would like to congratulate Wayne on his move. He has done a great job in Bermuda where he has been instrumental in building and cementing Digicel’s position as a full service telecommunications provider.

“I would like to thank him for his service to date and to wish him all the best for his new role on the board which I know he will make a great success of. Likewise, I would like to congratulate Alistair on his promotion and am confident that he will continue to deliver on our promise to the people of Bermuda of best value, best service and best network.”

    Didn’t expect this.

    • You Wouod Think So says:

I was told this was in the works 6 or so months ago, but didn’t believe it. Wow.

  2. Umm.... says:

The end of an era. On a personal level, I would like to thank Mr. Caines for the work that he has done. Digicel has done a tremendous job in being active in our community and I believe that can be attributed to Mr. Caines commitment to his country. I wish you all the best in whatever you do next.

      Wayne,

  3. Big Shoes to Fill says:

Interesting news and best of luck to Mr. Beak. You will have big shoes to fill.

Mr. Caines, the best of luck to you in your future endeavours and thanks for keeping the Bermuda community in your view while you grew the Digicel prescence.

  4. Deep Thinker says:

I wish Mr Beak all the best. Well done to Mr Caines, you are an inspiration.

  5. darren booth says:

sorry don’t quite understand this.has mr.caines been let go.a polite way of saying fired?i can honestly say,the fact that mr.caines ran digicel influenced my decision to use there services!there are not many local ceo’s of big companies and i feel proud of that fact that he made good at digicel.he is a great example to all young bermudians of the power of education and living the right way.yours sincerley darren booth

    • Green says:

He left he did not get fired.

    • M says:

Who knows what really happened? I’m disappointed that after all Mr. Caines’ good work another Bermudian wasn’t being groomed for the job. If I recall correctly, Caines entered that position with no telecom experience to speak of so bringing another Bermuda along to fill his shoes couldn’t have been that hard.

      • M?? says:

How do you know that he did not have telecomm experience? Also im sure the decision was not up to him to determine who will take his place.

Digicel is in 32 different markets and is governed by a private board who make those decisions. How can you make a comment like that have have NO idea what you are talking about? Mr. Caines has done countless things for Bermuda and Bermudians while in his position, and for you to negate that with your comments is ignorant.

Well done Mr. Caines hats off to you. Thank you for ALL that you have done (Seen and Unseen.

    • Creamy says:

He has been made Vice Chairman so it looks like this was voluntary for all concerned.

    • Truth Teller says:

Yes something seems very fishy here. Was he pushed out? Note the global business and telecom’s experience of his replacement…

  6. From a Digicel Manager says:

Wayne was not let go….. Wayne handed in his letter of resignation after working in a very stressful and demanding job for over 6 years. It was a decision he was contemplating for 1 year.

As a matter of fact,he was asked by the local chairman as well as Digicel Group to stay on and he stated that his time had come and he wanted to persue other opportunities. I am a bit confused how Digicel getting a new CEO translates into Wayne getting fired. No truth to it, I guess the next move will answer all of the questions from the peanut gallery. PS wayne is the longest Serving CEO in any of the Digicel markets. IN his time he had diversified the offerings and more than trippled the company’s bottom line will keeping them as corporately responsible company.

Wayne All the Best in your next steps, you have served Digicel and Bermuda Well.

    • js says:

Caines has a history of resigning

he resigned from the DPP’s office

he resigned as EB’s chief of staff

I’m just surprised he lasted 6 years

      • You Wouod Think So says:

So? resigning in good standing and after producing growth and great results while on top is not something to be ashamed of!!!! More people should do the same. Most companies and staff suffer when management remain past their effective life within a company.

Personally, I would prefer to be the big fish in a little pond than a little fish in a big pond.

      • Concerned Citizen says:

Look at the envious person right here! Wayne decided to move on, unlike some people(JS) who seem to be stuck in everything. Let the Man determine his life, and wish him the best….hater

    • js says:

      your name should read

      From a Former Digicel CEO

    • Sooooo says:

the million dollar question is….. was the job advertised? how many Bermudians were interviewed? and was the job offered to a Bermudian at the same pay as Mr. Beak is getting…

  7. Makes Sense says:

    @Darren Booth,

Mr Caines did not get fired, he resigned. If you know him, his departure is consistent with his life’s journey. Like you, I have stayed loyal to Digicel because of him. I hope Digicel realize what they had in Mr Caines

  8. Conservative says:

I did some research on this today, he decided to move on, just like a VP of underwriting at ACE or XL moves to be SVP at a rival insurer, or how an SVP at one bank left to be an EVP at another bank, its called career progression people.

No CEO of these companies owns anything except their decisions, the companies are owned by shareholders, in this case its a matter of public record, just surprised they didn’t bend OBA’s arm to bring someone from Dublin like they do with their other profitable markets.

Look forward to seeing more moves amongst young talented professionals in the insurance, and services space in the coming years, no need to turn this into a negative story.

Disappointing to see him go though.

  9. CommonSensenBda says:

If Mr Caines left willingly, you mean to tell me that he had no time to hand picked and train a young BLACK BERMUDIAN MAN to fill his shoes!?

    PLEASE !!!

    • Truth Teller says:

I guess Greg Cannonier was unavailable…

    • Farmer Giles says:

…and there was me thinking ‘Affirmative Action’ was dead and buried.

  10. Herbalist says:

He did not see, recommend or promote a Bermudian whilst he was CEO,to take his place?

  11. leagle eagle says:

Love to know the real ‘story behind the story’-but all the best to Wayne–you always did a great job-even from our days back at the AG/DPP! You were the primary reason I stayed a loyal customer of Digicel!! With you gone-may be time for me to move on as well-to another carrier!

  12. leagle eagle says:

Love to know the real ‘story behind the story’-but all the best to Wayne–you always did a great job-even from our days back at the AG/DPP! You were the primary reason I stayed a loyal customer of Digicel!! With you gone-may be time for me to move on as well-no longer any reason to prefer Digicel

  13. Typical Bermudian way of thinking says:

Why is it always Bermudians to be the most negative and least supportive. Not everything has to be the woratc. Are scenario. If you must know, he resigned because he is moving on to bigger and better things. Just because he is CEO at Digicel does not mean he has to stop there. He has bigger dreams and aspirations. Let the man continue to grow and be happy and congratulate him. So what if he has resigned from a few post. Every time he embraced a new endeavor it was bigger and better. Why would he stop now? And for yu negative folk who immediately assume he did not try to appoint a Bermudian, he did offer the job to some of his fellow co-workers and Mr. beak was the only one who wanted the challenge and responsibility of running Digicel in this competitive market. It’s not easy to run a telecomunication company to reach targets set by the board. No one wanted that responsibility on their shoulders. Wayne has done it for 6 years which is a Digicel Record for any CEO in any market. And In Wayne’s words “forward ever backwards never”! Let the man grow and expand his business ventures. He is very intelligent and busines driven. Wayne congratulations and your work has been commendable throughout Bermuda. All the best to you and good luck to Mr. beak
