Intern Community Day Proves Successful

A group of interns who participated in The Centre on Philanthrophy’s sixth annual Summer Intern Community Day, celebrated on Nelson Mandela Day, participating in service projects at 10 non-profit organisations.

A spokesperson said, “It’s fitting that The Centre on Philanthropy celebrated its sixth annual Summer Intern Community Day on Nelson Mandela Day, which is focused on people devoting their time to community service every year on July 18.

“Since 2009, the United Nations declared July 18 “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the legend’s indelible contribution to a world culture of peace and freedom and his important legacy to carry forward.”

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has said, “The call to action on Mandela Day is for each of us to go out and do something, an opportunity for everyone to bring the best out of themselves by taking some form of action in solidarity with others, to be of service, and to inspire change in the world.”

“The Centre on Philanthropy is amazed by the inspired action of service demonstrated by 120 summer interns who dedicated their time and talent during a sweltering hot summer day to benefit our community. 11 teams contributed their enthusiasm and hard work to participate in service projects at ten non-profit organisations.

“Participation in the programme has more doubled over the years and The Centre on Philanthropy is extremely pleased with this success.

“The Centre on Philanthropy coordinated with a diverse range of non-profits who support vulnerable individuals and their families, provide care for our island’s seniors, and preserve and exhibit Maritime artifacts and historic buildings.

“Projects included painting interior spaces at seniors’ residences and The Salvation Army Harbour Light Centre, painting outdoors at the National Maritime Museum and BIOS, and wrapping food collection boxes at The Eliza Dolittle Society’s Food Bank.”

“It’s fantastic to experience the high level of energy these interns bring to service projects each summer,” said Jennifer Pitcher, Volunteer Programme Coordinator for The Centre on Philanthropy. “It’s so inspiring to watch them in action as their incredible efforts make our community a much more vibrant place to live in.”

“To make the day more exciting for youth participants and inspire the community to get involved, The Centre on Philanthropy has incorporated a Facebook Photo Challenge as part of their Summer Intern Community Day for the past couple of years.

“Each team of interns is encouraged to be creative with their photos during their project and select their favourite one to enter in The Centre on Philanthropy’s Facebook Photo Challenge.

“Teams have until Tuesday, July 29 at 1.00pm to garner the most ‘likes’ for their photo as the team with the most likes wins. The friendly competition inspires teams to have fun while engaging their colleagues and peers to support them and their commitment to our community.

“Team Validus were champions in the 2013 Facebook Photo Challenge and Team XL received an honourable mention with a narrow margin between the two during the entire contest.

“Please support this year’s teams and cast your vote by “liking” your favourite photo. To view the photos in the 2014 Facebook Photo Challenge please visit The Centre on Philanthropy’s Facebook page.

“The Centre on Philanthropy is extremely grateful to all participating non-profit organisations for hosting projects and the teams of interns and their companies for enabling them to participate in the 2014 Summer Intern Community Day.
