Team Hurricane Represented At Coaching U Live

Doug-ReedThe Team Hurricane Basketball Program’s summer of growth and learning continued with its attendance at Coaching U Live held at Mendenhall Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Coaching U LIVE is an annual two-day coaching development event that features widely recognized expert speakers in an intense, no-nonsense learning environment.

For Team Hurricane Founder and Head Coach, Doug Reed [pictured], this was his first opportunity to attend Coaching U Live.

He said, “It was truly an enlightening experience. The insights shared were inspiring. They went beyond the X & O’s of basketball.

“The focus was on team building, and the tools needed to run a successful organization. The speakers spoke from personal experience and provided lessons and strategies that anyone in a leadership role can benefit from.”

Featured speakers at the event included among others: Doc Rivers, current Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Clippers who spoke on “The Most Important Things A Leader Must Do.” Geno Auriemma, Head Coach at the University of Connecticut and 9-time NCAA Women’s Basketball Champion who shared what goes on “Inside A Championship Program.” Kevin Eastman, founder of Coaching U Live and recently named Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Clippers, discussed “Building a True Team.”

“My notepad is filled with so many great insights that I took away from Coaching U Live. For example, I loved what Kevin Eastman says a winning organization is concerned with:

  • Building one another up.
  • The end results.
  • Team results, not who gets results.
  • Finding solutions, not placing blame.
  • Competition.

“I loved hearing that because I try to convey to my student-athlete’s that a champion must be concerned with selfless acts. The need to be unselfish, even in a highly competitive setting, is a vital message that those in leadership roles must convey if they want their organizations to have success.”

Coach Reed says that attendance at such events is vital in order to grow the sport of basketball in Bermuda.

He added, “Going to something like Coaching U Live gives us access to the great minds in the sport of basketball. Having a presence at clinics and conferences enables us to show our program’s commitment to the sport. We’re able to build relationships with prominent and experienced coaches and executives in the game of basketball…the decision makers.

“And so, as the sport of basketball grows in Bermuda, and as the talent level continues to improve, these contacts will be vital in exposing our student-athletes to elite basketball training. Also, the cultivating of such relationships will create opportunities for those Bermuda’s student-athletes, who have the ability, to play basketball competitively in college and beyond.”
