Video: Shark Encounter Off John Smiths Bay

July 17, 2014

A video has recently surfaced on Youtube showing what the uploader said was a shark encounter while hunting for lionfish off of John Smith’s Bay in Bermuda.

The video was posted by Youtuber rocketman889, who said: “Shark encounter while hunting for lionfish off of John Smith’s Bay, Bermuda. We were free diving around 7:15pm – 8:15pm and losing visibility.

“We had to poke the shark with our spears a few times as he came to investigate us. Sorry for the poor GoPro footage and shakiness of the footage.”

  1. bda boy says:

That looked like a nurse shark. No threat there.

    • smhagain says:

Definitely not a nurse shark mate. More like a dusky.

    • Raymond Ray says:

No-matter what many people imagine in reference to our sharks, (if not mistaken) one thing stands true and that be, “it has been decades since anyone has been attacked by a shark inshore or off shore for that matter in Bermuda waters” This bie’ was actually making a mountain out of a molehill and has instilled fear in countless people all for what, attention?

      • Beware says:

Raymond, nobody wants attention. the fact is ,sharks have always been there and will always be there. Its where they live dude!

      • RT says:

good point, but don’t think anyone was seeking attention. it appears that the news stations were looking for something different to report on.

  2. Toodle-oo says:

Is there anyone who still believes in and spreads the myth that the reefs stop the sharks from getting in ?

They’ve got those things called ‘fins’ and they can swim wherever they want !

ps , Thanks guys for helping out with the lionfish problem too .

  3. Joke says:

Agreed – looks like a Dusky. Not uncommon for Bermuda and no threat.

  4. You are actually at the dinner table at dinner time, early morning and eveningvare generally considered the sharks meal time
…and there you are poking it with spears…Spca ,this is definitively cruelty to animals…at least let him have a little bite!

  5. sharks says:

Need to take a read, these sharks are a threat.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galapagos_Sharks

    • Brooke says:

Well if it is Galapagos they people should just keep a look out. Dusky and Nurse sharks are no uncommon here and aren’t threatening. When I was younger we would fish off of Elbow and Warwick Long Bay beaches for sharks around each full moon. Lots of shark hash and oil!

    • Joke says:

Depends on whether this is a Galapagos or Dusky….your link is about the Galapagos and not the Dusky. Although the article mentions that they will approach divers, it also mentions that there are only two reported attacks as of 2008…I’d say we are more of a threat to them than the other way around.

  6. Truth is killin' me... says:

I thought it looked more like a black tipped reef shark…5′-6′ footer.

  7. truth be told says:

wait till you see it’s Aunty…she’s a big girl, her name is GOTCHA!

  8. Terry says:

    It’s a bloody shark.
Turn you camera off and get back ashore.
